Count me as one who would only sign him as a depth guy, not a starter.
I agree BUT, if the Cardinals could get him for depth and at the appropriate cost...

Well, even though not likely, it's worth trying! After all that's what the Cards did with Clark Haggans.

Every time a Steeler is cut there is going to be a thread on Whisehunt's interest in bringing him in. Just a fact that he likes guys that know the system and have played for a winning team.

We have had threads about bringing in Julius Peppers. At least, there is a possibility of bringing in Foote.

FOOTE’S DEPARTURE CLEARS $2.885 MILLION IN CAP SPACE
Posted by Mike Florio on April 28, 2009, 11:46 a.m.
With the Steelers dumping veteran linebacker Larry Foote, the uncharacteristically cap-strapped defending Super Bowl champs will clear $2.885 million in 2009 salary space.

Foote has started every game for five straight years. In 2008, he had his lowest output of that half-decade run, with only 63 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Lawrence Timmons, a 2007 first-round pick, will be expected to earn and keep one of the starting jobs at inside linebacker. To date, Timmons has been overshadowed by 2007 second-rounder LaMarr Woodley, who has become an impact player on the outside.

And it’s a bit surprising that the Steelers are making the move now, two months after the start of the 2009 league year. Cutting Foote in February would have given him a fair chance to participate in the free-agent feeding frenzy.

We also wonder whether the locker room will support the sudden departure of Foote, and whether there might be something more to the story that would make the guys left behind more inclined to accept the move.

James Harrison has agreed to a new contract that is worth $51.175 million over the next six seasons, according to a source. Included in the contract is roughly $20 million in bonuses, the source said.(KFFL)

In light of the above it makes the move seem even more strange. They had $20 million for a guy even older.

IIRC Harrison was a little more integral to their Super Bowl run. ;)

BRING HIM IN!!! At worst he's the same player than Hayes is and he's got tons of experience in the 3-4. He's either a starter or the best backup ILB in the entire league.

1. He will be 29 in two months.
2. He isnt strong enough to play the 3-4 SILB, its why he plays the 3-4 WILB for Pitt, so he would not be a replacement or backup to Hayes, it would be for Dansby.
3. What is up with the huge decline in production 3 years in a row?
4. How much is he willing to sign for?
5. Is he willing to be a backup until Dansby leaves in 2010?
6. If signed, is there a team out there willing to trade for Dansby and his 9 mill franchise tag?
7. Dansby on the outside with Foote and Hayes in the middle would be a far worse D then last year because Dansby would stink on the outside becuase he cannot set the edge, priority #1 for a 3-4 OLB, and Foote is not nearly as good in coverage as Dansby at the WILB spot.
8. In any 3-4 your WILB is usually your highest tackles guy, Foote started avery game and couldnt even get 70 tackles. This guy is overratted and Pitt doesnt drop good LB's they drop overused and done LB's. Count me as one who would only sign him as a depth guy, not a starter.
What he said.

I can't argue with too much of that except for #3 and that's because he's not really in a decline. The Steelers have been slowing phasing Lawrence Timmons into Foote's spot. That's why his production is down across the board. If you watch him he's still a player, not great or eye popping but he reminds me a ton of Hayes.

That was last year, the year prior Timmons rookie season he got very little time as a rookie and played primaraly on special teams only. Last year was the only year they split time with Foote in on 1st and 2nd down and Timmons coming in on 3rd down. And I have to disagree, he does not play or look like Hayes, one he is just a different type of player which is evident of the fact that they play different positions.

Not in 2005 as the poster stated. In 2005 he only started 3 games while Haggans was hurt.

DJ was referencing the deal that Harrison signed earlier this offseason even though Harrison was older. That 2005 reference was someone else.

Since we are Steelers West in the eyes of Steeler fans, he will probably get a look.

Maybe the Steelers saw that his production had decreased in each of the previous three seasons and wanted to go with a cheaper and younger option.

medium market club with a good players? you have to be ruthless and unsentimental in evaluating what you pay for.

I am sure no doubt they know there might be some drop off -- but they are willing to deal with it in light of the money saved.

BTW-- when you win a bunch, its called being rational and fans/media kinda go "hmm-- I thought he was a pretty good player-- oh well".

When you lose, the reaction is "another cost cutting move, those cheap bastards, they just dont want to win"

Now they are saying he wouldn't be released until after this weekend:

Steelers expected to release LB Larry Foote

By PFW staff
April 28, 2009

The Steelers are expected to release LB Larry Foote after the club's weekend minicamp, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and ESPN.com reported Tuesday.

Foote, 28, has started the last 80 regular-season games at inside linebacker for Pittsburgh. He is expected to be replaced in the starting lineup by third-year pro Lawrence Timmons. Foote is scheduled to make close to $2.9 million in salary this season.

Foote, who has notched 431 career tackles, is entering his eighth NFL campaign.
