Statistically speaking the Steelers had far and away the best pass defense in the regular season by yards allowed.

But I couldn't help noticing that they didn't (or haven't yet) played the top four NFL passing teams.....
1. New Orleans 311 ypg
2. Arizona 292 ypg
3. Denver 279 ypg
4. Houston 266 ypg

They did play numbers 5 and 6 and lost both games. Indianapolis was #5 and beat Pittsburgh 24-20 in week 10 with Peyton Manning throwing for 240 yards and three touchdowns. Number 6 Philadelphia beat the Steelers 15-6(1 TD, 2 FGs, 1 safety) in week 3. Donavan McNabb completed 24 of 35 passes for 196 yards and a passer rating of 80.2.

Conclusion: the Steeler defense is very good, but if the Cardinal defense can limit the Pittsburgh offense, the Cardinals have a chance to score enough to pull out a victory IMO.

GO CARDINALS!!!

Their pass defense is good, mainly because of how well they get to the QB and because of Palamalu's ability to improvise. However, their schedule definitely padded their defensive statistics. They payed against a lot of offenses who don't, or can't, do much passing.

The Steelers played Houston in week 1 and won 38-17. They also beat the #7 ranked Chargers twice who have very similar stats as the Cardinals (and the top ranked QB in the league). The Colts game was lost by 4 points despite 3 INT's thrown by Ben ( 2 within the Colts 20). They also beat the #9 ranked Cowboys in week 13 and handed Romo his worst rating of the season by picking him off 3 times. I know he's a choke artist in Dec. though. The Pats may not have ranked in the top 10 of passing offenses, but Cassel was no slouch for most of the season. They played him right after he came off of back to back 400+ yard games, and the Steelers just creamed him.

Believe me though, I'm nervous about what Warner, Boldin, Fitz and Breaston bring to the table, I'm just confident that the Steelers D can do what they are built to do and keep this game close.

Yeaaaaaahh.......We did load up on patsies.........so yeah........we're much softer than our statistics would indicate. Cake schedules do that.....If you get to the nuts and bolts of our defense were only on par with the Cardinals defense. We're paper tough and we can be annihilated thru the air.

Man, you're going to bolt for cover if the Cards win. We'll never see you on this board again. Of course, you'll try to come on here again as a blowhard, and try to rub our noses in it, if we lose. Yeah.

Not saying it wasn't tough, just not tough against the pass.

They didn't play anyone close to our caliber of a passing offense, they just didn't.

The Colts were the best they faced and they lost that game.

I said as much in another thread, I stand by it, they're beatable, not saying we will for sure but it's pure BS that they are some impossible obstacle, they're not.

There was no Woodley rushing from the other side in that game. The Colts didn't have to pick their poison. Parker was out, too.

incorrect........We played the Patriots who avg .4 of a yard less in total offense........they tried to spread us out 3 and 4 wide. They took an a$$whipping at home 33-10. Remember Cassel was hot like fire with that string of 400 yrd passing games. We did a pretty good job vs Chargers who werent far behind in passing offense and they were 0-2 against us. We managed pretty well vs Houston who was rated higher in total offense than the Cards. Look at that score. Dallas wasnt any slouch....Philly......

But if we can disrupt that timing with Warner and the receivers we'll have great success. I think our offense is gonna surprise most folks this game.

Some people just have to see for themselves I guess.

If you lose it will be statistically impossible so just keep trying to wake yourself up, that's what I'd do.

None of this bullcrap matters......

We have a good Offense.... They have a good defense.

The game will be won by the other units.... Our Defense, their offense, and BOTH special teams.

Yep, our record clearly indicates that...;)

I dunno... Monday morning you could be feeling a whole lot differently should the redbirds beat down the Stillers...
For us, while we might be disappointed, win or lose this season can only be categorized as GREAT!

Ok, good job to the OP on the stats gathering.. however .. I have to add that we didn't lose to the Colts because of our pass defense. Ben gave them a gift of an interception, and if I remember correctly, a 2nd interception due to a fluke bounce. Things just literally bounced the Colts way that day. They don't get those 14 points off interceptions, they lose, cuz it was a 4 point margin. Granted, a win is a win, and a loss is a loss .. but I'm just sayin!

I wish Sunday would just get here already! Go Steelers!

Nice. Swearing, for one. Also, I love how you come onto the board, talking smack about how there's almost no chance the Cards can possibly win, then getting offended when the fans don't bow down to your odd sense of logic. Man, to win with class, you should probably start posting with class.

Yeah just like several other Cards fans in our yards constantly bringin up last year, Fitz and Warner over and over and over.

The field is where this will be settled.

Not saying it wasn't tough, just not tough against the pass.

We played six of the ten best passing attacks in the league. In those games, these teams performed far lower than their average in the passing attack. Indy did the best, coming in at about 85% of their average, but teams but four of the six performed at 60% or under their average. If you take the game they played against the Steelers out of the equation, you would see their averages would match up with Denver and Arizona.

The reason Arizona and Denver finished #2 & #3 respectively, is because they didn't have to face the Steelers; while Houston, Indy, Philly, and San Diego did.

Stats are like street lights - you use them for illumination not as a prop for drunks to lean on.

If all that mattered were stats, we could just crank 'em into Madden 2009 and not play the game.

Now for some football talk - I see the game - when he have the ball - settling into a chess-match between Haley/Warner and LeBeau -with the Steeler DC mixing blitz packages with 2-man rushes (relying on his DB's to deliver crunching hits on Fitz, Q and Breaston) while disguising his looks - while Kurt tries to make the right reads/decisions and avoid doing anything disasterous.

On passing downs, one favorite Steeler defensive package is to send Casey Hampton to the sidelines and replace him with an extra DB. This would leave Pittsburgh with 2 defensive linemen.

So I'm wondering whether (assuming we're not 3rd & a gazillion and presumably with Edge and Smitty still in the backfield) Kurt - when he sees Casey leave the field - might not check to a running play between the tackles behind power blocking.
