I have to think Albert is not watching most of the time. He must be reading script or something. He often doesn't know what happened on the court.
Of course, all play-by-play announcers nowadays have to read promos while the action is going on. Most don't lose track of the game.

'Steve Albert, time has passed you by.' ;)

I wonder how the Suns FO is thinking this morning how Albert ended last night's telecast................"the rout"...."wipeout" :D

While he was correct, it may be his ticket out the door. We can hope so!

Just for kicks, I went back and read my post which started this thread on November 28th.

BC867 said:
There have been various opinions about our new TV play-by-play announcer posted to threads about other subjects.

My reaction after our first few games was not good and I was raked over the coals for it. So I gave him the benefit of the doubt and hoped he would get comfortable with experience, having previously worked play-by-play for the Nets, Hornets and Warriors.

Steve Albert is showing that he is the runt of the trio of Albert brothers who have announced many games. His self-deprecating sense of humor is wearing thin. If he doesn't think highly of himself, will we?

And following the action on the court as it happens? Too often, he doesn't have a clue, as many of us have posted by now.

My pet peeve is his prefacing his calls with, "It seems that . . ." That is a cop-out. He is not telling us what is happening. He is guessing, leaving himself the out of editing it afterwards.

Then when Eddie Johnson tells us (and him) what happened. he tags along with what EJ said by stating it in other words. Weak!

If he doesn't get with the program, I'll be watching the game on screen with muted sound and listen to the call by Al McCoy on KTAR radio.
My point isn't that I was so opinionated about it. But that Albert was so obvious about his shortcomings.

He is in the wrong place (not New York) at the wrong time (the 21st Century). :)

I really went in to the season with no opinion on the guy but it only took a game or two for me to tire of him. I know the first time I took a shot at him was during Anne's first or second game this season (Home game against Detroit). He kept going off on a tangent and she'd try to get him back on board but rarely succeeded.

He's just bad and maybe the idea is he'll be so horrible at his job that it will keep all of us internet and sports talk radio fans focused somewhere other than on this team and the people who put it together.

Well, unless you allow for the possibility of blackmail it's one of only two reasonable possibilities that come to mind (my mind, twisted or not). The other being that Sarver and company didn't realize the games were televised.

Or, maybe Lance Blanks is responsible for on-air talent evaluation as well.

He makes too many broadcasting mistakes, loses track of what's happening in the game. "The ball goes out of bounds. . . wait, it's a foul, Suns ball. . .excuse me, it's going the other way". I don't mind his humor so much. He is trying to connect humanly, rather than being a broadcasting robot. To me, it is the errors that are unacceptable. A professional basketball broadcaster needs to be able to follow the game and relay the information fluidly.

It is interesting that Comcast has now made the video unavailable. 'Wonder if the Wizards had anything to do with that.

OK, so Albert is tied for last. Or next-to-last. I am still going to continue muting the TV audio and listening to Al.

It wasn't all that bad a call IMO. Albert still reigns alone. And even if that were the worst call ever, one bad call does not compare to the catalog of mistakes that SA adds to with every Suns telecast.

Albert is like the Michael Beasley of sportscasters. He shows flashes of potential but, ultimately, disappoints.

Toward the bottom of an article about Jermaine O'Neal's daughter recuperating well was a blurb about the Suns declining broadcast ratings. Their 36.5% drop this season is the second worst behind Houston.

I googled for a comparison of TV vs. radio, but could find nothing. It would be interesting to see how Al McCoy's radio ratings (this season vs. last) compared to Steve Albert vs. Tom Leander.

Steve Albert isn't going anywhere. Sarver thinks he's a savant broadcaster.

Ill listen to Al McCoy over Albert, Leander, or anyone really. But your post just made me think of how kind of sad it is to hear Al do Suns game nowadays.

He's really slipped. He's more of a ridiculous homer than ever, he really struggles with some of the foreign player names, he's always complaining about arenas that have him sitting anywhere but courtside. He's kinda turned cranky and cantankerous.

What you're saying is true. But I'll still take him over Albert.

At least when Al misses a play (sitting up in the rafters), he appreciates and works with his color commentator bailing him out vs. Albert, who pretends that he knew it all along.

Al has been doing Suns games for 41 years and he is a farm boy from Iowa. Albert is doing his 64th Suns game and is from Brooklyn (and never lets us forget it).
