I'm with you. This draft turned out alot better than i thought it would after the Levi Brown pick, who is growing on me by the minute...My favorite pick of the draft is Buster Davis, this guy is everything you want in a linebacker, who cares if he is a couple inches shorter than the status quo, he is a flat out bulldog on defense. Branch in the second round is a HUGE steal, huge. Breaston is the big time returner we have lacked forever. Think about it, he has a chance to be an instant impact on our team, most 5th round picks sit on the bench and add depth in hopes they turn out to be something in 3 years whereas Breaston will instantly be our returner.

Agreed, I am thrilled with most of our picks, and I will give Griim and Whis the benefit of the doubt on Brown.

The deal on Breaston. Good return man with good receiving production earlier in his career. (I had him on my radar screen coming into this past Fall). But his production tailed off in his final season, and his forty time entering post season was said to be in the mid 4.5's.

He had an excellent week of East-West practices and game, and ran in the early to mid 4.4's (depending on whom you believe) in his workouts.

I like the pick. At #5 he brings something to the table that can tangibly help the team. I can't blame some of you folks for being disappointed though. We entered the draft with the stated objectives of adding a TE, maybe a FB and a WLB. And I know I'd like another #3 QB to push Shane Boyd. Guys on my radar screen at #141 included Pudewell, Patrick, Alexander and Troy Smith (whom I thought could be groomed as a Randall-El type slash QB/returner).

But as you can see, what we were forced to do with the pick was tantamount to stuffing 5 pounds of bleep into a one pound bag. That's show biz. The pick was a solid one even though it couldn't address all our other problems.

Well from the Levi interview. Matt and Edge called Brown and said they liked the pick and to welcome him. Not just the coaches liked Brown. So that's got to be positive...

If Beaston can be our Dante Hall I am all for it...

I'm excited about this pick. Our return game has been stinky for awhile. Hopefully he can spice it up a bit. The highlight reel is amazing. His stop and go change of direction is outstanding.

You can when Ben Patrick is on the board, the best player remaining in the draft. Whiz likes a two TE set he has said we are weak at TE and you pass a good blocking TE for a freaking punt returner. Give me a break this draft really really sucks with the exception of two picks.

You really do make it up as you go along.

On Ben Patrick from Street & Smith:

... will need to improve his in-line blocking. Should be a much better blocker given his size. Does not create much separation. Lacks speed and is not a consistent weapon downfield.

The Valley so low.
For what it's worth, TE Joe Newton was still on the board, lauded as a blocker, not too bad as a safety valve.

I'm too blah to have the energy to be divided about this pick. It's true our return game has been [avoiding 'pedestrian'] ambulatory--there's a good word. If Breaston gets it off the stretcher, hooray. I did think McCoy was supposed to do that--I can't remember if he had college success. I think we'll need better schemes/blockers, more than a speedster, and maybe they're coming too.

My frustration is that rounds 3-5 are where NE and other really good teams find gems. Maybe Davis is one, but I wish we had more picks down here--sitting thru rounds 4 and 6 is boring, and various winning programs with multiple picks in these rounds is frustrating, even if they make foolish picks--that's partly why so many posters are on edge. Maybe in a few years we'll be in their shoes, replacing our successful FAs with younger, cheaper draftees to argue about.

Might have the most positive impact of anyone they have taken in this draft. Excellent value pick.

WTF!!! with this pick!!!??? A WR?!!! should've taken another LB, we need as much comp at this position as possible. Should've taken the LB from OAKLAHOMA.

I about lost my breakfeast when I saw that pick... I hate Graves...

What were they thinking drafting 5th round pick that will come in and make an immediate impact in the return game?

We could have had any number of other players to come in and sit on the bench for at least two years with this pick. Whiz and Graves must be crazy to not want that?

I was hoping we'd address our PR/KR position. There's more need there than at TE or CB.

Well in Round 7 CB Travarious Bain would be a steal. Sat on the bench two years at the U and then transferred to Hampton and dominated. Very good speed, strong body and a playmaker who could double as returner. Also look out for TE Ben Patrick who Kiper thought would have went in 3rd as another Round 7 possibility.

I LOVE THIS PICK!!!!

You all know how big I was on Ginn, and we just drafted Poor Man's Ginn.

I freaking love this draft....Fix the OLine, Fix the DLine, get a motor and leader at LB, fix special teams. This is fantastic...everyone wants sexy picks, but sexy picks don't win games by themselves...they need these kind of guys to help them.

My garden called my this morning so I missed the NFL network stuff on Breaston. I saw the u-tube highlight reel. WOW is an understatement! The WR angle is not important. If he can do 75% of what I saw I am sold.

By the way, on the radio in Chicago this morning and on NFL network the Cards were called out for an outstanding first day. They stuck to a plan and addressed it with guys who can make a contribution right away.

Where's that guy who posts the Scout's Inc reports?

I question the pick because of the LBs and CBs there, but Breaston is a pretty good returner. He was Ted Ginn before Ted Ginn.

Here's the Scouts, Inc report on Breaston...I didn't see it posted already.

Steve Breaston
WR | (6'0", 193, 4.46) | MICHIGAN

Scouts Grade: 52 Selected by: Arizona Cardinals
Round: 5

Strengths: A homerun threat with the ball in his hands -- as a receiver, return man and on reverses. He shows great vision as a runner and sees creases opening up quickly. Shows very good initial burst and top-end speed. He displays the necessary second-gear to run away from defenders in the open field. Possesses outstanding body control and balance, showing the ability to stop-and-start without losing much in transition. He is elusive in space and will consistently make the first defender miss. He is one of the premier return specialists in this year's class.

Weaknesses: Has had some durability issues in the past. Lingering shoulder injury affected his play in 2005. He lacks ideal bulk and strength. Is lean and gets pushed around as a route runner at times. Will have some trouble getting off the line of scrimmage versus bigger, more physical defensive backs in the NFL. He does not make a lot of plays as a receiver in traffic. Is more dangerous after the catch than he is as a vertical route runner. He is an unpolished receiver who must improve the crispness of his routes. He disappears from games and seems to lack natural instincts and recognition skills as a receiver. He will lose focus and drop "catchable" passes occasionally. He lacks ideal strength as a run blocker and occasionally will fail to sustain even when in position and locked on.

Overall: Breaston was redshirted in 2002. In 2003, he played in all of Michigan's games making one start against Indiana (9/27) and caught 38 passes for 444 yards (11.7 average) and three touchdowns. Breaston also returned 45 punts for 619 yards (13.8 average) and scored two touchdowns. Breaston played in 11 games in 2004, missing the Indiana game with a finger injury, and finished the year with 34 receptions for 291 yards (8.6 average) and three touchdowns. He added 28 kickoff returns for 689 yards (24.6 average) and 24 punt returns for 292 yards (12.2 average) and one touchdown. Breaston played in all 11 games in 2005, (seven starts) caught 26 passes for 291 yard (11.2 average) and two touchdowns. He also finished with 23 kickoff returns for 646 yards (28.1 average) and one touchdown, as well as 29 punt returns for 365 yards (12.3 average). For his career, Breaston has carried the ball 32 times for 242 yards (7.6 average) and two touchdowns. He finished the 2006 season playing in all 13 games, catching 58 passes for 670 yards (11.6 average) and two touchdowns. He also added 29 punt returns for 332 yards (11.4 average) and a touchdown to go along with 21 kickoff returns for 467 yards (22.2 average).
Breaston finished strong as a senior but he lacks the physical tools to ever emerge as a difference-maker in the NFL. At best, Breaston will become a No. 4 receiver and a solid punt return specialist at the next level. In our opinion, Breaston is worth selecting no earlier than the fourth round of the 2007 draft.

Actually, I had him as my 4th round pick. My point was in response to the claim that he was a blocking tight-end. He may prove to be, but not at this point according to the reviews I read. Maybe one of the reasons he dropped to us.

So now what are you going to gripe about, when we got Patrick in the 7th???
