This is a moronic move, IMO. Why do this now? If he falls apart in the draft again, and if he fails to rebuild this team the way it needs to be rebuilt--and especially if he fails to find a quality QBOF--the Cards will have to fire him and eat a fat new contract instead of the contract he was on already.

Unfortunately, what this tells me is that he isn't gone even if he DOESN'T fix the problems. This tells me that, even if we suck, he'll remain in his job, and that's troubling at best. While it is optimal that the GM have the owner's trust, it isn't a great idea to trust unconditionally.
Yeah this is my problem. I know mike seems to love Keim. And that SEEMS like a good thing. But Bill loved Graves. See where I’m going with this?

Feeling ambivalent about this. Keim's passion and work ethic are exemplary---no questions about that. His chemistry with Michael Bidwill is excellent. What we need to see from Keim, imo, is a more aggressive and comprehensive approach to free agency. Like it or not, the Cardinals right now are the least attractive team in the NFC West for free agents and part of that is because of how many disgruntled players have left feeling that Keim lowballed their market value. To a degree all teams go through some of that---but recently the Cardinals have gone through more of that than usual. Plus, aside from his signing of DE Chandler Jones, three of his most recent big signings were excessive and have cost the team valuable cap space: (1) the Palmer extension at $24M a year---which ironically didn't afford more money for solidifying the OL; (2) the Mathieu contract which, if TM doesn't agree to rework, is now an albatross; (3) the Gresham contract which is beyond all form of human comprehension.

I thought it was real bogus of Keim last off-season to vow to the fans that he would be "very aggressive in free agency" only to wind up signing 3 older veterans---(who are the easiest to sign particularly in the first few days of FA because there is far less competition and maybe even no competition at that point)---and he signed them on the 2nd day of FA, only 1 of whom (Bethea) had a good year.

As for his drafts, we should see in the next year or two who was more to blame for the lack of player development---Keim and his scouts---or the coaches. These lackluster drafts have to change.

I do not think Keim has done enough to warrant this kind of extension.

Powerful argument Mitch.

as opposed to complacent?? At least the desperate GM will try something
I know you're excited about splashy moves, but man, doing something out of desperation rarely works. Just like people here are mad about the Adrian Peterson trade - that was desperation, and didn't work out.

feels like this is keims honey badger contract...

or maybe it went like this...

Mike- "so, steve lets talk. what are we gonna do about our QB?"

Steve- " Ya know Mike, I been thinkin on that and there are options... but some of them are gonna cost us"

Mike-" well, we have some cap space...make the deal"

Steve-" it aint just that Mike,... the cap space alone guys dont want to come here and besides I really like this guy in the draft"

Mike- "so whats the problem?"

Steve- "well mike...its gonna take a huge deal to get us in the right position to get him,...and if it dont work out,...well,...I might not be able to get another job Mike...so it has me pretty nervous"

Mike- "I see... tell ya what,...here, sign this.. Your my boy steve, I dont want ya feeling insecure...sign this extension...make your deals..if it dont work out, then we reload and start over"

Steve-' aw gee, thanks mike...this way if things get bad and I end up doing sideline reporting for espn at least I aint gotta sell my boat"

Mike- "exactly. I know how much you love that boat stevie... now go get our guy"

Steve-"sweet... I luv ya man!! Hey Karen!! Get me cleveland NY and Indy on the phone please!"

I dont think AP was a desperation move. We needed a back...it was publicly clear AP wasnt working out in NO and we had the cap space for his contract... trading for him just made sure we didnt have to compete with anyone else for his services.
it wasnt a "master stroke" which was apparently hoped for... but a sixth round pick is a pretty low price to pay....desperation would have been calling that same team and offering a first and a fourth for Ingram because we need a starting RB.............trading for AP was just "taking whats available"
I think more folks here were upset because bringing in AP wasnt going to make us a playoff team and everybody knew that...it was just going to get us a couple more wins in a wasted season.

does not count against the cap, and it's not your money.. what do you care?

Because, if the team has to eat any of that, it may affect what the owner wants to spend moving forward? It's not like they have this machine that prints money for them above what counts against the cap. Even when you massage the cap, you have to PAY the players, usually paying more in real cash when you get them to re-structure. I also wouldn't want the owner to get gun-shy if he is burned by Keim.

I hope Keim continues to do some things well, and really, REALLY fixes his eff-ups. I very much do. Would I have the faith to bet millions of dollars on that? Eh...

And if he screws up in the draft again, and fails to land us a QB? Will he still deserve it then? I get that he doesn't count against the cap, but if they have to fire him later, it will cost the team way more.

That is a lot of if's...

It is not just the quality of a GM but stability at the position... I see this as a positive because even an average GM who is afforded stability can garner positive results:newcards:

Uh I place talent identification and acquisition above “trust of the owner” but that’s just what I want first and foremost in a GM.

The team already feels he can identify and acquire talent. That is why he was the GM in the first place.

Sure when you are first hiring a GM you want them to be able to do that but that isn't the case here.

This is a clear sign that Michael trusts that Keim can execute the organization's goals.

Further, the length of it sends a clear signal that they aren't even doubting he is the right person.

I trust that Michael Bidwill wants to win and wants to continue to define the Arizona Cardinals as a "great organization" and since Michael clearly trusts the path that Keim is on, that is good enough for me.

Keim has been the best GM the Cardinals have ever had. Period. He's been with the organization through a lot of the lean years, and much like Michael, I think it drives the both of them to to never stand pat, and constantly seek out ways to move the team forward.

I think he's done a heck of a good job and am glad he's been rewarded for it. I'm also looking forward to seeing who he brings in to play QB in 2018.

He brought in Carson and got a ton more out of him than any of us imagined. I'd call that hitting it out of the park. If his follow-up QB selection bombs, folks are ready to toss SK out of here despite 20 very loyal years with the organization, the last five of which were the most successful in franchise history??? That's crazy. It seems people are already bashing him for his next QB before we've even gotten to the first OTA. Steve and Michael have both said they'll be aggressive in finding the next QB. They've given me no reason to doubt them and frankly, I'm looking forward to seeing how it all plays out.

Go Cards!!!

So a big school stud is guaranteed to make an impact?
Nothing is guaranteed in the draft. All about probability, and it's more probable that a prospect from a big school has a higher chance of succeeding. Obviously that doesn't mean you discount smaller school prospects, but you really have to do a lot more evaluating with them. Keim takes more small school prospects than any other GM...I'd venture to say.

Chad Williams?

Can you pick a big school player drafted after Williams that had much of an impact in 2017? Just curious. I looked the draft list and didn't see anyone that stood out to me. Only one drafted after that stood out was small school Tarek Cohen.

Rams picked two in 2017 with new Regime - one, Cooper Kupp from EWU was a major part of their success.

Dede Westbrook, Samaje Perine, Desmond King, and some decent TE's also. Can't really compare Williams and Kupp either...Kupp was insanely polished and had tremendous success at EWU. Williams was considered a 5th or 6th round pick...If i remember correctly.
