After reading a few of the threads, I get the feeling that a few posters truly underestimate what Steve Nash does for this team.
There will never ever be another Steve Nash.
Mike D'Antoni's system works. You can win playoff series with it. We've proven that. We still have the Spurs monkey on our back, but until we play them in a playoff series we have to face the fact that they have the wood on us. Point being, we can hold our own against pretty much any team in a 7 game series. All this nonsense about halfcourt basketball and games being slowed down is just that. Nonsense!
But it takes a special type of player to make that offense work. Without Steve Nash, our offense falls apart. I'm sure you've all noticed that watching the games when Nash sits down for only a few minutes and our lead disappears time and time again.
I can't speak for him personally, but I think that he would have 2-3 good years left in him. After that, I can't help but feel that this team is totally screwed.
There is only 2 PG's I believe that would be able to run this offense. Chris Paul and to a lesser extent Andre Miller. Problem being, Andre Miller can't shoot to save his life.
What seperates Nash from the pack is his basketball brain and his unselfishness. He just seems to know when to pass and when to shoot. Yes, he has his TO's, but he just makes so many amazing plays that you just overlook them.
You could argue that he's worth ten of Amare's PPG, and ten of Marion's. His ability to keep the dribble and not force up crazy layups is so underrated. His soft touch around the rim is incredible. His balance, knowledge and leadership is second-to-none. His soccer background also helps, plus he's an outstanding shooter for a guard.
I'm rambling now, so I'll try to wrap it up.
I just feel that as Phoenix fans, we've been spoilt these last 2 1/2 years. We've been witnesses to the most exciting brand of basketball, in my opinion, ever and I do believe that when Nash retires, we will never be able to reach that level of basketball greatness again and it saddens me.
I'm just trying to say, even if we don't win a championship, we should really enjoy the style they play and the great memories that came from it. I know I'll never forget these last 3 years.
Kudos to Steve Nash, Mike D'Antoni and the rest of the Suns' roster for making the game of basketball special again.
