• Ted Cottrell (most recently a UFL coach but has been a DC with four NFL teams)-No, been there done that with this guy. Don't know why he's even being mentioned.

• Dick Jauron (Eagles DB coach)-Not going to happen as he will be DC in Philly.

• Eric Mangini (former Browns and Jets head coach)-Oh, hell no!
• Jim Mora Jr. (was last the head coach of the Seahawks)-Already gone.

• Dean Pees (Ravens LB coach, was Patriots DC)-Not a bad choice but, of course, with the talent he has in Baltimore, I could be their LB coach.

• Ray Rhodes (Texans asst., been a HC and DC)-Also not a bad choice. He did well as a DC everywhere he's coached.

• Bob Sanders (Bills LB coach, been a DC)-Not enough of a body of work to form an opinion.

• Bill Sheridan (LB coach for Dolphins, was DC for Giants)-I think this is a good choice.

• Bob Slowik (Redskins DB coach, was DC with four teams)-Also not a bad choice.

• Brian Stewart (Houston Cougars DC, was Cowboys DC)-Really no different than we've had these past 4 years. He was moderately successful in Dallas with more talent than we have here so i'll pass.
• Mike Trgovac (Packers DL coach, was Panthers DC)-Not a bad choice either. Had some good defenses in Carolina.

• Dave Wannstedt (was Pittsburgh Panthers HC, been NFL HC and DC)-Hell no #2.

Not many good choices on that list. The only positive all share is that they never had Bill Davis type failures. We could do worse than those names.

Philly hired Washburn for the position of DL coach.

What upsets me is he was the Titans DL coach and just went over to Philly(same position DL coach), but yet it looks like the Cardinals, are going to have to jump thru hoops to get Butler who in turn would be getting a promotion. Go figure...

good job. Thanks.

Actually, they hired him as DL coach, not DC.

Great thanks!

From the article:
The point is this isn't a job for an up-and-comer or an inexperienced coach. No learning on the job or grooming here.
This defensive coordinator hire needs to bring instant credibility. He needs to let Whisenhunt focus on the disaster that is the quarterback position. Ownership of the defense is a must with this job.
Agreed!

According to an article I read, Washburn had his contract expire and was free to sign with anyone.

Per Sando, this morning:

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic expects Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt to pursue Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton as their next defensive coordinator if Pittsburgh denies permission on linebackers coach Keith Butler. Butler is in line to eventually succeed Dick LeBeau as the Steelers' defensive coordinator. Somers: "Horton played under LeBeau with Bengals and has coached under him with the Steelers since 2004. Horton has coached in the NFL for 16 years and played for 10 with the Bengals and Cowboys. He also has coached with the Redskins, Bengals and Lions. If the Steelers advance to the Super Bowl, Whisenhunt might not have the luxury of waiting to talk to Butler or Horton. Other names have not surfaced yet, but I obviously will report them as I get confirmation."
