From ESPN:
There has been some chatter that the Suns could send Amare Stoudemire to the Knicks in a three-team sign-and-trade that would also include committed free agent Hakim Warrick from Chicago.

And according to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic, such a deal has been agree upon.

"The Suns will use Stoudemire's official departure [Thursday] to make a pair of sign-and-trade deals with New York and Chicago, netting the Suns a $16.5 million trade exception from the Knicks and using part of that for Hakim Warrick's acquisition, according to Stoudemire's agent, Happy Walters," he writes.

There had been rumblings David Lee could head back as a replacement for Stoudemie in the Suns' lineup but that won't happen.

Instead, the team will have a large trade exception to use -- though $4 million of it will be used to acquire Warrick -- one in which they could utilize on a scorer with Stoudemire now heading to the Knicks.

If we cant get at least 4-5 first round picks or talented prospects out of that trade exception and Jason Richardson's expiring contract the new GM deserves to be fired.

i fully expect the bulk of that exception to be allowed to lapse unused.

Well then, fire him now. When it comes to draft picks, the Suns believe in the old adage that it's better to give than receive. And talented prospects cost money, not just cap space.

Fire a guy that hasn't been hired yet, talk about job security. Besides whoever gets hired will just be Sarver's henchman.

I could see getting at most two first-rounders with the TPE by taking back two-mid-level contracts.

We could also get at most two first-rounders with JRich's contract.

I suppose we could use our cap space next season to garner another pick, maybe.

Of course, as some losers in the Lebron sweepstakes will have leftover cap space, the Suns will have no monopoly on accepting unwanted contracts.

Hopefully the overpaid players we would take back would only be on 2-3 year contracts so that they are off the books by the time the draft picks are used.

I hope the Suns can use the exception to rob somebody blind. The good end of the KT deal.

It will be hard to get over on a team the way the Sonics did with the Suns on the KT deal. With the increased cap the luxury tax is set at 70mil and a lot of the teams with that type of pay roll are comfortable paying tax. Nuggets, Pacers, 6ers and Hornets are the teams flirting with the tax range that may be looking to dump expirings for savings. I'm sure the Lakers would like to be rid of Vujacic's contract as well but I don't think they have the assets to make it worthwhile.

I think slin was insinuating that Sarver should fire himself as de facto GM.

I say give the Hornets a call and ask about David West.

Maybe. But first, if I were Sarver, I'd call Jerry Colangelo and see if he wants a one year stint as GM to pull my butt out of the fire.

Of course, highly unlikely. West's salary is way too reasonable for the production he brings - I think, if we call up the Hornets, they'll be much more likely to push for us to take Okafor.

Can someone remind me again why I should care about a trade exception? To me, this deal was done to provide a smoke screen by Sarver, creating the illusion that he has a plan... that consists of more than saving money.

Well it's at least an option that the Suns wouldn't have if they didn't do a sign and trade. I understand your concern that Sarver might not use it all but it does give the Suns flexibility to sign another player.

What I find interesting is that others had to bring this matter to Sarver's attention in public. Maybe Happy Walters should be the Suns GM.

Seems to me like wishful thinking at this point. Maybe, just maybe, we'll use another part of the exception at some point in the next year to sign someone based on need, but that's about all I'd expect out of Sarver. It's nice to think that we could get something out of our assets, but we thought that too when we talked about trading Marion and then Amare, and in the end we got nothing for Marion (other than Shaq for a year who was then given away) and nothing for Amare other than this TPE.

The idea that the Suns would, for example, take on a bad contract in order to get draft picks doesn't make much sense in light of the fact that the Suns, even though they are now significantly under LT, are still considering dumping a usable player like Barbosa for a buyout player just to save a few more millions.

Of course I could be wrong. The TPE does give us the ability to snag a very good player during the season when a team decides they want to go another direction and reduce payroll. Ironically, had we not committed to Warrick so soon, with the TPE we would have had enough money to do a sign-and-trade for any of the top-tier free agents available this summer, not that they would want to come here. But the Suns didn't exactly make a play for Bosh or Boozer or anyone else.

 Agree. i will take Bass hustle before West or Okafor. If he can also master the PnR, it would be a steal.

The Suns never even considered themselves a player for a top tier FA. This shows Sarver's banking philosophy more than anything else. He viewed Amare as a thing he could lose and save money rather than looking at Amare as a bargaining chip. The same with KT.

I'd recommend waiting. We don't know how the summer is going to play out and I'd like to have someboy on our side who knows what he's doing. :bang:

I was hoping for Jerry West, myself.

So that when he retires he can trade an incredibly improved Robin Lopez to the Lakers for Phil's courtside chair? Jerry West's loyalties will always be tied to LA and he'd eat Sarver alive from the inside out. Come to think of it, West might not be so bad for us after all.

That's what I am talking about, Steve! Then we could get a new owner and start rebuilding from the top down! :D
