16-Rashard Mendenhall-RB,Illinoise
50-Justin King-CB, Penn State
81-Mike McGlynn-G, Pitt
116-Dexter Jackson-WR, Appalachian State
149-Andre Fluellen-DT, Florida State
185-Mike Dragosavich-P, North Dakota State
225-Jack Ikegwuonu-CB, Wisconsin

This pretty much mirrors the kind of draft I'd like to see...although I have no idea who the hell Mike Dragosavich is.

Somebody in an a very early thread pretty much called me an arse when I said Jack Ikkegyoun@^*# or whatever his name from Wisky might last till the late rounds because of injury and whatever....whoever it was thought he'd be gone by round 2.....not likely.

I'm on board up until the 4th round. Think there will be a stud still available there at DE possibly. 3rd might be high for McGlynn too. I like Pressley there. Then an OL 4th, possibly Zuttah.

The second best rated punter in the draft.

There are no studs available at any position in the 4th round.

Dexter Jackson would be a very good slot WR for this team.

Okay, I have to make a few adjustments (not as many as you might think!), but I didn't want to start a whole new thread with yet another mock.

First, the Allen trade only made me change the name of the team picking at #17. I still think the Chiefs take Clady at #5, realizing that while a good DE might be available at #17, a good OT probably won't.

Living in Western PA, I've managed to catch some of the Steeler's draft buzz. Word is they will probably either take a WR (Limas Sweed was mentioned) or a DE (Kentwan Balmer). The wild card is Stewart, who some in the 'Burgh think is a possibility, but I have him gone already. I was uncomfortable having Balmer left out of the first, so I now have him going #23 to the Steelers.

Also, now that Dallas has traded for Pacman, I don't think they use that second 1st rounder for a CB. I was a little leary in putting Flowers in the 1st round, because I think he'll slide into the second, so I'm pulling Flowers in favor of Limas Sweed.

Finally, now that I have Sweed going right before the 49ers pick, which is where I had him originally, the 49ers need a new player. Call me a homer, but I don't think Connor falls out of the 1st round. I now have him slotted to the 49ers at #29. Breaks my heart that they get one of my boys, but c'est la vie.

So, there you have it. These are the new picks as they stand:

#17-Kansas City: Derrick Harvey-DE, Florida
#23-Pittsburgh: Kentwan Balmer-DL, North Carolina
#28-Dallas: Limas Sweed-WR, Texas
#29-San Francisco: Dan Connor-LB, Penn State

Some other things might change, but that's what I have right now.

I think the difference to which you're thinking of is between Parcells' more traditional 3-4 vs a Wade Phillips 3-4. In the Parcells version, the defensive linemen work in a two gap system, taking up blockers. In this system bull-strong lineman would be important, but they won't get a lot of statistical glory. In the Phillips version the lineman act as penetrators, along with the linebackers, to create more disruption at the line and to pressure the QB. Smaller, quicker Dlineman could be used in place of larger, stronger guys. When the Cardinals are in the 3-4 I'm guessing, based on watching Dockett twitch and fire off the ball, that he's going for maximum disruption. I've got no idea what the other 3-4 teams do (I know the Steelers zone blitz a lot, but have no idea what the dline's general orders are). Sorry about how crampt the text is, no matter how many times I hit the "enter" key, my browser just ignores it.

Bump for knowledge:

http://www.azcardinals.com/news/detail.php?PRKey=2327

per Pendergast via Urban

One of the things Pendergast likes about his scheme is its flexibility. In a true 3-4, the front guys must all be big and bulky and able to take on a blocker and sometimes wrestle with the guy depending on the defensive play.
For the Cardinals, the emphasis is more on single-gap penetration and as such, there is an ability to use different players. They can use an explosive “three-technique” player like Dockett at defensive end, or they could use someone with longer arms who is more of a traditional end-type.

....

Read the whole article if you haven't already.

so much like Dallas' 3-4 the Cardinals use penetrators at the line instead of control men. Good to know.

of course, Clancy adds a well known smoke and mirrors elements that is all his own...

... and the team's 3rd down % on D and 4th quarter prevent is legendarily suspect, but it's a new years so...
