Anyone able to describe what the actual role of the SS really is these days across the NFL?? I'm trying to figure out if A-Dub is truly incapable of playing the position, or, has the SS position become the position that A-Dub can only play, which is a "up at the line" Linebacker type??

In any case, today I believe I saw the single worst game Wilson has played since his rookie year... Wow!

Beat like a drum and didn't look like he was trying. He wouldn't make it up at the line either.

Agreed.

But, to be fair, the Cardinals are 100% drlussional thinking Wilson could cover Antonio Gates. There are few, if any, safwties that can cover Gates 1 on 1, and Wilson can hardly cover marginal TE's.

Horrible game plan by the coaches, and Wilson looked like he should retire after that performance. I personally think it is because he was put in a poor decision, but if we expect Wilson to cover people like Gates then it is time to get a new SS for the role we need him to play. Cause Wilson is not that guy for the role they wanted him to play yesterday.

I could have told you that and I am not a NFL football coach.

It's obviously poor coaching. I mean they even had Paris Lenon covering Antonio Gates down the seam 1 on 1! That was about as disgusting as watching a turtle speed Gerald Hayes trying to cover Jermichael Finley in the playoffs. Billy Davis has outstayed his welcome in AZ. :mulli:

We should just stay in a nickel package with Wilson playing a roving LB or basically play Porter's position on 1st and 2nd down.

The guy simply cannot cover anybody. Wilson needs to be coming forward. I don't think I have ever seen him intercept a pass while running with a wr or tight end. He is either coming forward or crossing the field.

I find it interesting that nobody has been able to describe the fundamental role of the SS position in the NFL today...

they mostly all have the same issue. Polamalu even gets picked on at times but he's better in coverage than most.

Taylor Mays had his first start yesterday, led the team in tackles, had a TD on special teams, and yet the coaches said one of the reasons he had so many tackles is Atlanta threw to his area a lot.

NFL OC's are not idiots, they find a weakness and pick on it until you stop it. We should have doubled Gates.

Last week Chicago played Green Bay, I had Olsen on my fantasy team and needed a big game from him so I watched with interest, Green Bay had Charles Woodson man to man on Olsen much of the game. Defending DPOY who's a CB, covering a TE.That's an example of figuring out whose likely to hurt you the most and taking him away. I don't think DRC is big and strong enough to cover Gates but the point is there's a huge difference between what GB did to stop the Bears biggest weapon, and what we did to stop Gates. They schemed to take him away, we just told AW to play better.

It just seems to me that the SS position is one that is almost wasted for the most part. Or, better question perhaps - who is the best, prototypical SS in the game today, and why?
I agree with everything you said, which makes me wonder what is the benefit in playing A-Dub as a SS?? It's not like he's spending any time in the opponents backfield these days... Opponents are gashing the crap out of us on the ground, and as we know, A-Dub can't cover...
It seems we should have a guy who is either capable of being a true run-stuffer and QB pressure threat, or a guy who is a true cover talent.

I dunno... this position causes me more confusion and frustration than almost any other. :bang:

SS is going the way of the FB. Many teams don't really use them because of the passing game, offensively & defensively. As you say athleticly SS can't match up in man. That is a big reason why I've been questioning the Cards abundance of safeties on the roster & use of the 3 safety look for years. The true SS is a dinosaur position in todays NFL.
