PHOENIX – Aug. 24, 2003 -- Several members of the Arizona Diamondbacks attended SummerSlam tonight.
Among them were Brandon Webb, Mike Koplove, Stephen Randolph, Carlos Baerga and Luis Gonzalez.
“We’re all huge wrestling fans,” said Gonzalez, a three-time All Star. “Actually, we had a game across the street at 1. I got thrown out of the game early. The guys were getting on me because they said I was going to run over here early to catch the matches.
“This is just a lot of fun for us. Wrestling has become such a huge part now of a lot of people’s lives. A lot of my teammates, we had a great opportunity to come out here and watch these guys wrestle. It’s a tough sport. These guys get thrown around and beat up. We just enjoy watching these guys perform.”
Asked what he thought about SummerSlam, Gonzalez said, “It was awesome. To have a pay-per-view here in Phoenix, Arizona, you saw a lot of people out here tonight. It’s exciting to see a lot of fans out here supporting these wrestlers.”
Gonzalez said he “grew up a huge wrestling fan” in Tampa, Fla. He also attended a WWE event earlier this year in Philadelphia. “Any chance we get to see these guys, we always try to take advantage of it,” he said.
