The Post has obtained the fine details of the heavily protected future first-round pick the Knicks have given Phoenix.

The Suns can't touch it until 2006. The Knicks keep it if they are 25th or better in the draft order. In 2007, they keep it if they are 24th or better. In 2008, they keep it if they are 23rd or better. The kicker is if the Knicks still have it by 2010, it goes to Phoenix, unprotected.

YIKES!!

It appears that this pick is 6 years away!!

This is similar to the pick we gave the spurs last year, but I do not think ours is that long in the future??

Why Yikes? This is exactly how the Pistons got Darko and this is exactly how the Suns would have gotten Lebron if the Cavs pick wasn't owed from before the new CBA that puts a time limit on owed picks.

It says nothing about 2009 protection. It's not unlikely that the Knicks will have a pick better than 23 in all those years. Their roster seems not to be working out so far, they traded almost all their future to us and are stuck in salary cap hell for years.

And if we keep our picks this year we will have had 3 straight years of 2 first round picks.

And looking in the future we have 1 for every year plus one more (cancel out the Cavs pick and the one we owe the Spurs)

in my opinion the knicks put too much protection on the pick and it might come back to haunt them. i like what the suns did with there protection on the barbosa trade.

In any case, the Suns do not need three draft picks this year. It is hard enough to integrate two guys onto a team and they end up on IR anyway. Going into next season, the Sons will have the following under contractL

Marion
Stoudemire
Johnson
Jacobsen
Lampe
White
Eisely
Voskuhl
Cabakpa
Barbosa

Even if the Suns don't sign an FA or re-sign Dice or Harvey, this is 10 people. Add a couple of draft picks and they are easily looking at 12 before any other signings such as for Vujanic.

i dont think its such a bad thing for us to get an unprotected pick in 2010. This team should be rebuilt and well on its way by that time and to add a high pick would just be cake.

there could be no draft by 2010. i always wondered what would happen if teams have this waiting future compensation and the cba changed and did away with the draft. how would we get compensated?

That is totally unrealistic--rookie salaries would be out of control.

I think you are off by a year Slin. I think we would have this years cavs pick no matter what, not Lebron.

Could be wrong though

The protection on our pick which we traded to SAS is very similar to NYK's.
That's also dangeruos.
It's possible that we will give a lottery pick to the Spurs in 2009.

This is one of the reasons teams like to get their draft picks back through trades. When the Suns got back a pick from Orlando on the original Hardaway deal, they not only used it to take Carbakapa but also ensured that it was lot high lottery pick on expiration.

Nice work, The Post, but you left out some important details.

Detail #1: What is the protection level in 2009?

Detail #2: Do the Knicks have the option to complete the deal by conveying a protected pick?

Detail #3: Am I even going to be alive in 2010? Why do I give a damn?
