senior vp? i don't know what the hell that means
and it's not reassuring to hear the typical "i like this move" comment from biased observers

we all know the only real change would be giving someone the power to make decisions independent of Sarver. even if Jones is competent, under this move his relationship with Saver has not changed

though i know far too little about what goes on behind closed doors at HQ to say it stinks,
i can postulate that it doesn't pass the smell test

How does having a retired football player who works for the front office of a competing local sports franchise as a part-owner of the Suns lend any credibility to the Suns franchise?

it doesn't. it lends more to the incompetence of Suns ownership though.

Actually I think it might actually be the opposite, I've seen a lot of comments ridiculing Sarver for inviting Fitz to the meeting. Myself, I suspect Fitz is looking at his next career and Sarver is trying to help him along his way. I don't know if he's also preparing him for a role with the Suns but I sure wouldn't dismiss that possibility.

Here is Bickley's take on Larry Fitzgerald's recent involvement with Sarver and the Suns and possibly becoming a small investor.

It sounds like Sarver is in awe of him and Larry might just be able to be the guy to convince Sarver to let the guys do their job.

That is the only hope for the Suns to be competitive and develop consistency.

As Bickley says, Fitz may be the key to the Suns future. 'Something for the fans to hope for.

If it works, it works. Might as well try it.

I don't think I've ever seen so much apathy about the Suns in my life. Unless there is just some kind of SHOCKING news, it's just like everyone is so at their wits end, that any move made at this point is just met with... ok. I mean... this is a major hire and we've got a whopping... three pages.

I haven't chimed in on it but it's not from apathy, it's more a lack of knowledge. I just don't pay that much attention to the front office guys around the league unless they do something that stands out, good or bad. And I don't know what to think of someone that's working with a Coach like SVG or Thibs, you never know how much control they really have. Anyway, I'm hopeful but that's about as far as I can go.

I heard in a nutshell, Bowers not that good in the draft, but good in free agency and in trades. We have been pretty weak in trades during the Ryan McDonough regime. Not enough data on James Jones to adequedately assess. Certainly, dabbling around the edges on a PG was a slow fiddle while Rome burned. The Oubre trade gives him a plus rating. We just need a few mopre of those to tell if he is good at trades.

I usually hate Bickley because he is so cynical and negative. Now it looks like I disagree with him when he is positive too. I think Sarver loves rubbing shoulders with famous athletes. In fact, I think that is his primary reason for being an NBA owner. He wants Larry to be a minority owner because then they get to be buds.

great, if Fitz's presence is the start of something that turns out to be substantial, like him becoming a minority owner, or better yet, majority owner

but sad if this was just for show and image repair

Bower and Bukstein will report to Jones.

I am mixed. I thought James Jones should be retained on some level. However, I was of the mind that Bower should have been at the top of the pyramid due to his experience. Under Jones in the hierarchy, it appears he is just there to add commentary. If you like James Jones this is good news. If you wanted experienced direction, it has been muted due to the structure the Suns have made these moves. I hope I am proved wrong over time.

I didn't realize James Jones was the VP of Basketball Operations last season. I thought his title had something to do with Player Personnel or he was the Assistant GM. Knowing that makes this make a little more sense but I still think Bower should have been brought in at a level above James Jones, or at least on the same level. I don't know how long his contract is for but I don't think he'll be with the Suns all that long. He's basically here to help James Jones get more experience and help him along. I wish that would have been discussed in previous articles when Bower was rumored for the job because JJ's take on Bower then mattered just as much as Sarver's at that point since Bower would be below Jones.

Given the announced power structure, it's pretty darn clear this (including hiring Bower) was all just for show and a feebke attempt at image repair.

fantastic!

jesus. WTF is Lon Babby involved at ANY level with this franchise still? Wouldn't want him as my concession stand dude in that arena, much less leading the search for a VP of Basketball.

can't wait to see how people interpret the word "led". should be fun...

Hear this Suns fans. :wink2:

Fitzgerald, of course, has a relationship with Suns owner Robert Sarver.

“He’s drastically misunderstood. I love Mr. Sarver,” Fitzgerald said of Sarver in December. “I spent a lot of time with him. I can’t think of anybody who I trust more than him. He’s one of those guys, he’ll look you in your eye, he’ll shake your hand. He would go out of his way to help anybody he knows. Once you know him … it’s easy to love him.”

This just shows that anyone, even someone as classy a guy as Fitzgerald, can be bought.
