Golden State paid almost 350 million this past season in salary and Luxury Tax (as a repeat offender). This season that figure is expected to go up to roughly 500 Million.
Here were the numbers going into the season. The Suns would come in about 77 million in luxury tax in my scenario above. That is JUST adding McGee to the mix (also signing Ayton to near max). That would put them as #4. However, the Nets, Clips for example are expecting to move players.

Team

Payroll

Luxury Tax

Total Spent
Golden State Warriors$175,858,992$170,331,206$346,190,198
Brooklyn Nets$169,286,329$97,731,568$267,017,897
Los Angeles Clippers$166,162,398$83,114,696$249,277,094
Milwaukee Bucks$160,245,385$58,647,698$218,893,083
Los Angeles Lakers$156,636,217$45,113,318$201,749,535
Utah Jazz$147,743,929$19,094,825$166,838,754
Philadelphia 76ers$145,249,786$13,876,627$159,126,413

Sporttrac is also predicting Golden State's luxury tax bill to come in at this for 2023 (before resigning Jordan Pool).

Est. Luxury Tax Bill$74,870,942

His comment was sort of nebulous. I am sure they are willing to pay SOME luxury tax. However, Sarver, the Suns are not the Lakers or Golden State. The moves over the coming weeks are going to expose how far they are willing to go. This Cam move doesn't seem to be in that direction.

This is what Robert Sarver said about paying the luxury tax.

I really like Cam Johnson - but I am really not sure paying him 15-20 million a year is a good idea.

I also kind of doubt a lottery team is going to want to give up a 4 year cheap salary lottery pick for a 26 year old at that salary. After all teams in the lottery are looking for more than just one more piece usually.

I hope the Suns can pull it off, but I kind of doubt they will be able to.

Most of the better teams pay can only afford to pay their three top players large dollars and then fill in the rest of their roster as best they can behind them.

For the Suns that's going to be Booker, Paul (2022-23) and hopefully Ayton. Then Bridges extension kicks in next season.

Suns fans are going to have to except a lot of low paid players filling out the roster in future years.

It'll be even more fraught when we're paying Book supermax money.

I absolutely have no idea anymore what to do with Ayton; but I wonder at these rumors that he wants to leave. You don't knowingly acquire or keep a player who doesn't want to play for you--it's a terrible idea. If anyone doubt that, they can study Vince Carter's time with the Suns.

The Hornets might take Westbrook just to cut him so they can free up money for Miles Bridges. The Lakers would have to take Hayward and other salary.

In the history of Jones as GM I don’t think a single trade or signing has leaked out beforehand.

It's a worse idea to let him go for nothing, or to take a crap trade offer.

Yeah, it's not going to get easier if the Suns re-sign Ayton. Maybe that's one of the reasons they seem to be looking at foreign prospects.

A bit late to be going after Eric Gordon.

I have heard both Sarver and Jones mentioned it. Again, not that it really means much. You can only be 5 million over and paying luxury tax. The question isn't if he is willing to pay it. The question is how much of it is he willing to pay. He still answers to an ownership group and if he starts moving guys like Cam? We have our answer.

If the Suns had gone after Gordon before we have a ring IMO. The Suns didn't want the salary if I remember the report correctly.
I don't agree. Suns would have still lost with Gordon. Rest of the team was just not right the whole playoffs, and he would not have been enough of a difference to put us over the top.

I don't think this is a good move, unless it is a Dario + Shamet deal.

Exactly. Being willing to pay some luxury tax is hugely different to being willing to pay any amount of luxury tax. I am sure there is a cutoff amount, and it will never be made public most likely.

Said it last summer and still believe it… that mind boggling 4 year deal for Shamet is going to screw us when it comes time to pay Cam J. That money should have been earmarked for his eventual extension.

That’s on Monty. His love affair with trash players is going to get him fired

The above creates fodder for another Suns history comment. Why do you think Jerry Colangelo settled on trading Barkley for spare parts and junk? I think it was Sam Cassell, Robert Horry, Chucky Brown, and...ehh....Mark Bryant. I've always found it hard to believe that he couldn't find a better deal. Not one draft pick?
