I don't think it makes us look that bad by itself, but a) why the hell were we gonna give that guy such a large contract? b) we lost out to the Raptors and c) we targeted someone and AGAIN whiffed.
It's the totality of the situation - it's not like this is the first the Suns themselves have been dissapointed this off-season and the pressure mounts with each day and with each FA gone off the board.
That being said, I could care less either way if we got him or not - thinking a 6'6 guy who could POSSIBLY tote the rock woudl be our back-up PG was pretty high wishful thinking.
I agree that the amount we were offering was questionable, but it certainly wasn't "whiffing" by any means. We've probably targetted several other players, we just don't know it. Which has happened every year.
There were never that many free agents to begin with that would have played under our qualifications--we're talking very deep into the bench, probably not going to overpay (unlike the bottom feeders that have cap room), in today's NBA those are very much against us--has nothing to do with the GM.
That said, I am confident in their opinion of TT, I'm just trying to piece together why they thought he was only worth what they were offering them. I don't want to second-guess, but if his value was so much higher with the Clippers, why not us? (Aside from the fact that he will probably get significantly higher minutes and maybe start with the Clips) My only answer would be that if we projected him as a starter getting those kind of minutes, we might have indeed offered the MLE. As it is, there was no way outside of injury he would get that amount of time, so they must have thought he wasn't worth it. Which makes some sense in the long run. And that's without even taking into account his history.
