Suns pursuing Kidd?
The Suns have offered Kurt Thomas, Raja Bell and a first-round pick to the Nets for Jason Kidd, according to the Bergen Record ...

Salary-wise it doesn't make sense and basketball-wise it doesn't make sense. He is making waaaay too much scrilla for the Suns to want this. I don't buy it.

And remarkably, even the Phoenix Suns called Thorn yesterday, according to a Western Conference official who did not want to be identified because GMs don't comment publicly on other teams' operations. Ostensibly, the Suns are worried about Steve Nash's chronic back problem, and even though they don't have the kind of salaries it would take to land Kidd, they wanted to get involved -- even if it was only to keep him away from the Lakers.

I don't know if he's worth the Hawks pick-- but Thomas, Banks, Bell and the Hawks pick works for Kidd cap wise. That would mean more minutes for Pat Burke and James Jones, but it would also mean one of the greatest offensive teams of all time.

Can you imagine always having either Jason Kidd or Steve Nash on the floor and sometimes both?

If a deal happened with Thomas/Banks/Bell, here would be the playoff rotation:

Starters:
Nash
Kidd
Marion
Diaw
Stoudemre

Bench:
Barbosa
Jones
Burke

This would also give someone like Jalen Rose or Jumaine Jones a chance to play as well. But I have to be honest, that sounds like a championship team.

But who do you trade in the offseason? I mean you have pretty much 4 max players (Marion, Amare, Nash and Kidd) with Boris and Barbosa making some serious coin. One of the big 4 and/or Boris would have to go. Perhaps you trade Kidd and Boris in the offseason for KG? Gotta love the trade deadline hysteria.

You forgot to look at the luxury tax figure. We would be well over for this season, and next season, forget about it. That trade is not happening. We are trying to trade Banks to get rid of his contract. Not pick up another max one.

Marion to CHA straight up for Gerald Wallace. They are like $11M under the cap, so it works when you have a disparity of about $9M in contracts....

Marion is worth more than Gerald Wallace. You have to be kidding.

Yes, it's an unfair trade talent wise, but we avoid luxury tax and we are asking another team to absorb $9M. That evens it out, period. BTW, that would only happen IF Kidd were here. I wouldn't do it otherwise....

Hoopshype isn't the only one talking about this. ESPN and others are as well. Lakers still seem like the favorites for Kidd (though I don't see him working the triangle as well, especially since Kobe dominates the ball the way he does).

hinking about this deal and I came up with a couple of things....

First off the Suns would have to add in Banks at the minimum to get the deal done financially.

2nd. I think if we add in maybe Jones the Nets add in Moore.

That way we get a big back in the deal.

Alright it breaks down like this.....Moore would take over for KT off the bench or even starting and bring Diaw off the bench. START Kidd at the starting 2 gaurd spot. Reason being, Bell and Kidd's stats are relatively the same. Other than Bells better 3FG%, Kidd is better at the rest (RBS and Assts). That would definitely give the Suns a huge advantage on the fast breaks, because either Nash or Kidd could ignite it. Nash would still be the main guy.

All in all, do I want this trade to go down? I wouldn't mind it for those pieces, but I don't want to lose the ATL pick. But I could see the Championship coming eisier to the Suns with a deal similar to this going down.

This is absurd. This offense would not get better by replacing Bell with Kidd. The D'Antoni "system" needs shooters. Kidd isn't even fast anymore.

If Nash's back or shoulder are too problematic, shut him down and try again next year. Replace Nash with Kidd and this team isn't half as good.

Nothing about this makes an ounce of sense. It can't possibly be correct.

This trade would be a disaster for us. Kurt is a key defender for us, without him I dont think we can win the championship. And while Kidd is better than Bell, Raja is a much better 3 point shooter, which is also very important in our offense. Plus giving away the Atlanta pick doesnt make sense and would hurt us in the future. I hate this rumor.

I just now saw that the hoopshype excerpt is taken from a small newspaper in the New Jersey area. It's a completely bogus rumor, probably thrown out by a low-level Nets staffer, in an attempt to drive up the Kidd price tag.

Giving up the ATL#1 would absolutely kill this deal for me. I think I can see how this COULD work (Nash-Kidd combo), but not at that expense. I really don't even want to see KT gone. I was iffy on this trade before ATL#1 was involved, but not anymore....

I'm aware of the luxury tax. And by the way, listing this year's doesn't make any sense. The contracts still have to match up and it would only be an extra million or so in disparity. The difference in luxury dollars also wouldn't start until the 2009-20010 season. Nobody we'd be trading would be expiring until then. It's at that point that we would have lost Kurt Thomas's contract. That year would also, by the way, be the last year of Kidd and Marion's contracts, essentially clearing 38 millions dollars off the books(as well as James Jones, pushing it into the 42 million dollar range). It would also be clearing 14 million dollars in salary earlier than it would have in our current plan(from Banks and Bell).

From a luxury tax perspective, it would only add one extra year of extreme payment, but replacing two rotation players with just one. So, if the Suns wanted to sign another player to a larger-than-minimum contract, the extra luxury tax could have to be a little bit more.

I'm not saying it's a good deal, but just saying it's terrible because of Kidd's contract isn't the full story. The main problem is that if we don't win in the next three years, we will have mortgaged our future for nothing. But I know I don't speak alone when I say a championship will make me pretty happy for a long time.

I think the Suns are just messing around trying to throw a wrench into LA's plans.

Or at the very least, be able to get insider information on how the talks are going.

The Kidd trade is probably a terrible idea, but I will say it'd be really nice to have Jason Kidd on the floor while Nash rests.

I agree with you Eric. This is why I think the rumor is silly. If the Suns are involved, its just to enhance NJ's bargaining power. We don't want Kidd on the Lakers.

Any thought of getting Jason Kidd is unbelievable. The Nets are trying to get Andrew Bynum from the Lakers--what makes any of you think they would be satisfied with Kurt Thomas?

Doesn't the trading deadline end today at 1 PM (I'm not sure what time zone)?
