The big question is, can last year's spectacular luck with health be duplicated? Thomas broke down again and Diaw allegedly had back issues -- frankly I think that's an alibi, but whatever -- but the rest of the core was practically bulletproof.

I think that if anybody in the world has an even slightly suspect back, and shows up to play an NBA season overweight, the back will give them problems.

It's an excuse that makes sense, but is completely his fault.

good signing. breathing a bit easier in regards to the suns now. but would absolutely love it if they could acquire pj brown. that would put us over the top imo.

I really like the signing, and can breathe a lot easier now, like Ouchie. It'd be nice to get a young big man to round out the team, but I'm pretty happy with what we have right now.

The nice thing here is that when Brian Skinner takes the court, I won't be saying, "Oh crap. Here we go." He is an NBA player who actually belongs on the court.

This has turned out to be a pretty good signing. I'm even starting to like his 2-tone goatee :)

I always liked his goatee, he kinda looks like a gangsta version of king tut to me and that is a definate plus in my book.

Did anyone see the group of fans sporting the Skinner Beard at the clips game?

They all had these big exaggerated beards strapped on that had the bottom half dyed bright orange. It was hilarious.

Well Im pleased as punch with this, of course he's not KT, but in relation to their prices, Skinner is a better deal. If the Suns can still land PJ Brown in January or something, then I'd be ecstatic. I think an Amare, Brown, Skinner combo can certainly out duel a Elson, Duncan, Oberto trio, or at least hold them to a draw, and the rest of the Suns line up is better than the rest of what the Spurs have.

I'd like to believe that's true. How do you figure that?

Well, ignoriong Amare & Duncan

Nash > Parker
Bell < Ginobili
LB > Finley
Hill > Bowen
Marion > Horry
Diaw > Oberto
Skinner = Elson
Barry = Banks

Ginobili over Bell is the main advantage. Parker & Nash is close to a wash.

Basketball is not a sport where individual matchups matter anything close to how the pieces fit together. For example, Bowen is not a great player, but his role on the Spurs is critical to their success. In thei Spurs case, te whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

If you look at the Bulls, you see a team where the whole is less than the sum of the parts.

I agree. And when the Spurs play well together as a team, they are tough to beat. So are the Suns, but I think the current Suns team has a ways to go still before they can say they are playing a 100% as a unit.

As for Skinner, his play has been a pleasant surprise thus far.

Absolutely. They still suffer from too much "sticky ball" when opponents put on defensive pressure. IMHO, that is is when they most need to focus on moving without the ball and making the extra pass -- against tight defenses. They still seem to forget it at times.

Dont care what skinner looks like, he has been the big (pleasant) suprise this year. By the end of the year he may be comfortable in the system and the suns staff might look almost brilliant for this move. I'll admit he can hold his ground in the low block as well as KT, but on the break and on the (shot)blocks, he a huge upgrade. Now if he could only shoot consistently on the pick and pop.

nowagimp,
Now if he could only shoot consistently on the pick and pop.

Now and then he looks comfortable from 15 - 18 feet so there is some hope in that regard... not a lot, IMO, because he's been consistently poor from the FT line. If that shot doesn't come around I'd rather have him rolling to the hoop - he's looked pretty good doing that, too.

In general, I'd like him to be intent on getting to the basket whenever his man goes to help because its a cinch guys will help off him if they don't pay a price. As I remarked before I think his teammates ought to look for him to reinforce that behavior.

He looked good tonight vs the warriors as well.

15 minutes he had 7 rebounds, 2 blocks, 3 of 5 shooting and 3 of 5 from the line (more that he drew the fouls than the percentage). Not bad for a guy nobody else was seeking in the off the season.
