IMO the Suns no matter what you read or what they say, had/have NO intention of bringing him over this year. Basically their thinking was to draft Dragic and save some money by leaving him overseas for at least one year. I just wish they would be forthright and honest with their fans.

Seems odd that they would pay the Spurs 500k in an attempt to save money.

Its going to cost them alot more than the 500k that they antied up to draft the guy to get him over here this year and like I said they have no real desire to spend that kind of money on a guy who needs more playing time overseas. I just wish they would be honest about it.

I thought they couldn't bring him over this year because of his contract overseas. He has a buy out clause the following year, but Kerr was saying they are willing to buy him and it lies mainly on Dragic's side to issue the deal. I'm sure if they could bring him over here now, they would.

Its an opinion that makes no sense.

They had plenty of takers if they wanted to deal the pick. Watch the video of the draft on Suns.com, they had an offer of Charlotte's 2009 pick (I assume 2nd round of course) from the Lakers for #48.

The footage also shows that they were willing to go to $750,000 in cash in the trade. That's more than the salary a second rounder picked at that spot would draw.

Its fine to by cynical, but this one is beyond reason.

It would've been dumb to believe Dragic can come over this following season.
He has to wait until his buyout clause comes up, which is next year.

No he doesnt have to wait. The Suns and his team could work something out and the chances of that are good considering they just brought in a pg to start for them.

Stashing a second-round pick doesn't save money at all, because they don't have guaranteed salaries anyway. There's nothing to stop a team from drafting someone in the second round and then ignoring him, so there's precisely zero financial risk.

Yeah, that too.

IMO, this is no smokescreen about Dragic. The Suns want him sooner rather than later because he can flat out play. I definitely think he could back up Steve Nash considering the other players the Suns have tried at PG.

See part of a Steve Kerr article about Dragic below. http://suns.marqui.com/blog/suns01_06270802.aspx

The next step is to work to try to secure Goran for next season, which is possible. As I mentioned, he doesn't have a buyout in his contract, but he and his representatives can negotiate one with his team. We're hopeful that something could come about which would allow him to play for us next year, but we'll see. If not, we will definitely have him for the following season.

Also see Dragic's Suns workout video there.

I really hope you guys are right. Maybe I am just being to cynical about the situation.
Also who brought in a pg to start for them? Are you talking about the team that Dragic currently plays for overseas?

Anyone notice, at the 11:00 minute mark of the first link, that the future second round pick that we traded is the GOLDEN STATE #2 next year. That will be an early pick I would assume.

Were you in the draft room with the Suns? Just curious. Seems like you have a lot of insight into the inner workings of the organization.

I noticed this as well, however, what really caught my eye was the Lakers offering Charlotte's 09 pick for #48. I was wondering what was going on there. Were the Laker's offering a first round pick for #48? Griffin was impressed enough to write it on the board.

So in other words, pretty much in line with most posts? ;)

i think it was a second rounder, you can hear them talk about it briefly.. I heard "second round 09" somewhere...

and it would of been an option if Dragic was gone.

Knicks rang, that was interesting for the 48th pick...

I don't get why some fans would think Sarver was avoiding spending more money in the long run by paying the Spurs cash and giving them 2 second round picks, he may be cheap but it is obvious from their excitement from the video that they feel they have a good chance of getting Dragic here and it's not like they weren't aware of Spurs/Splitter fiasco.

Actually dick was pretty funny the whole video, when Griff drops his pen and is giving the camera a moon shot, he throws out a sarcastic "Jesus Christ" as in WTF? I bet Dick is a fun guy to hang with, unfortunately I and other fans need to hate his guts because we want a championship. When he wins I will become the #1 cabo dick fan.

The Suns hands are tied. They cannot buy out his contract because the buy out clause in his contract doesn't kick in until next season. Dragic could possibly buyout his own contract for about 1.5 million. The Suns are allowed to kick in 500,000 on his behalf.

There is nothing else the Suns can offer and ultimately it will be up to his current team to accept the buy out offer from Dragic if they wish to even take him up on it at all. They don't have much incentive and if they say he has to wait....he does.

So really there is nothing the Suns can work out. It's between Dragic and his current team.

You have a link to the video or any videos from draft night?

I don't dismiss conspiracy theories out of hand. After learning of a ref betting on games he's officiating, I' open to any reasonable hypothesis.

But sometimes it sounds like an attitude in search of a justificaation for the attitude. A good conspiray theary should make internal sense, even if the extrenal facts doen't line up. But a conspiracy theory that makes no sesne even under its own assumptions seems pretty pointless.

To me there is a vastly more interesting unanswered question. "If this guy is so great, how is that no one else noticed?" His workout withe the Suns was prety good, but was it enough to move a guy from "who's he?" to almost getting the #15 pick?

Smokescreen?? What bunk! Who even said they had to pick up Dragic....they could have just picked Lopez and left it alone.

Its only a smokescreen if you see a conspiracy around every turn.
