Just a reminder that the summer league games begin this Friday, with the first two Suns games and the last one televised on NBA TV.

2010 Suns Vegas summer league schedule:

  1. Friday, July 9, vs. Houston Rockets, 3 p.m. NBA TV
  2. Saturday, July 10, vs. Toronto Raptors, 1 p.m. NBA TV
  3. Monday, July 12, vs. NBA D-League Select, 5:30 p.m.
  4. Wednesday, July 14, vs. Cleveland Cavaliers, 5:30 p.m.
  5. Thursday, July 15, vs. Golden State Warriors, 3 p.m. NBA TV

From what I understand, the 3 bolded games will be LIVE broadcasts. The other 2 will be shown on NBA TV, but just tape delayed (can't confirm that, but that's what I've heard/read).

, and that Dwayne Jones will not participate for whatever reason.

I have not read anything that reverses what we were hearing a few months ago. Coro was writing that Jones seemed to have more offensive skills than advertised and was a strong rebounder. Everyone seems to think he's dropped off the table, though I haven't heard what makes people think so or why.

Obviously Jones is just a journeyman. He's played a total of 636 minutes in the NBA with 5 teams. That is low for one season. But 16 lead the D-League.

I'm both a Villanova fan (alum and season ticket holder living in Philly) and a Suns fan, so I thought I'd give you my perspective on Scottie Reynolds, in case anyone was interested, having watched him for 4 years.

He's not going to be a point guard. He's not a great penetrator, as far as dribbling through traffic to the hoop. Actually, he never impressed me that much as a passer either, nothing remarkable.

That being said, he's just a very productive player. He shoots well -- 50.0% in Big East play last year, which for a guard I think is rather amazing, especially when almost half his shots were 3-point shots, of which he made 42% (conference stats). He has a good mid-range jumper and picks his spots well. He knows how to draw contact when he goes to the basket and get to the line, and when he's there he's an 84% FT shooter. He isn't a ball hog or a chucker, he plays within the team. But when our team was down and needed a lift, it was usually Scottie who turned the tide.

Defensively, he's only ok, to be honest. He defends with a lot of heart and hustle, but he's not a lockdown defender by any stretch. His steals were usually chances he takes on passes darting into passing lanes, not pickpocketing his man.

He's probably the type of guy that if you watched guys play one-on-one, he'd look like he was among the least talented, but then put him on a side and his team would win the game and he'd be the best player.

He seems like he's very smart, a hard worker, very coachable, and knows how to take advantage of the defense when they make mistakes. Not a lot of raw talent, but does his job well.

Since every team needs to have 11th and 12th players who usually don't play many minutes anyway and are mainly practice guys, he'd be a good fit. He won't get into any trouble and hopefully his effort and determination will be contagious.

I had no idea those existed in the Brick East.

I only saw Reynolds a few times. He seemed to be a solid, "clutch" player. I'm not convinced his skills translate in NBA guard play, but I really wish him luck.

Hopefully he will be Eddie House version 2.0 with better ball handling skills. :D

I do like what I have seen of Reynolds on video and I don't think anyone just lucks into being a first team All-American. IMO, the thing is to look at is what he can do, not what he can't. There have been many PG types that were never drafted but turned out well. Robert Pack and Avery Johnson most readily come to mind.

I just watched a bunch of videos of Reynolds and I liked most of what I saw. He likes to push the ball up the floor, though not super fast. He knows when to pull up at midrange. Takes hits and finishes - doesn't shy away from contact. Uses the rim extremely well - he needs to as he has very limited hops. He has quite large hands - one clip showed him shaking hands with someone so one could judge fairly well. He was pretty clearly Villanova's goto guy in the clutch. I'd say he was an inch under his listed height of 6'2"

He's also a streaky shooter - being highlight clips he made everything he put up but his scoring avg. indicates he isn't always like that. I wouldn't guess he'll suffer from the longer 3pt line in the pros because many of his long range shots were beyond the NBA line. When he's 'on' he doesn't worry much about the range.

From what I saw, I'd say the guy who treated us to a long description of his game was on target, which means he isn't a stellar defender. He penetrated more than I expected but only when he had a pretty open path to the hoop. Nothing in the highlights showing him passing the ball - I think I saw a stat like 3.4 apg.

Altogether, I'd say he'd have to improve his shooting, ball handling, passing and be every bit as crafty and clutch as people say in order to stick in the league. I mean, basically he's a SG in a small PG body and few of those make it. On the other hand I wouldn't bet against him...

Are you allowed to play on more than one Summer League team? I just watched Matt Janning score 20 points for the Celtics.

Summer league is a very weird place for guys trying to make a roster. We've seen guys absolutely tear up the summer league and show nothing at training camp. A few guys have suffered from poor team play in summer league and still turned out to be productive pros.

As a rule, I take summer league failures as most suggestive. When Strawberry flopped his second summer league; it was clear he was not going to make it.

Do you or anyone remember SF Mike Niles impressing the Suns in summer league, training camp and eventually making the Suns roster only to be a bust. I think it was back in 1981. There is more to the story but I can't remember it. Anyway, this makes your case about not assuming too much about players in summer league.

I was living in San Francisco at the time. Some guys do fine until until it counts.

I remember writeups about Amundson during summer league a least a couple years before signing with the Suns. I remember writing about him two or three years ago. However he joined teams with lots of bigs and thus rarely got off the bench until he got here.
