Having just been through all this research myself, I'd buy one of these two if you're looking for a rear-projection TV:nice now I need to just get a hdtv sucks just having a regular standard tv and hd would really be awsome 360 games and sporting events but i'm saving up for one Anyone know which brand is best for hd samsung etc?
Mitsubishi DLP's are one of the best IMO. The 65" is thier best value right now.
Awesome news!!!! I upgraded to a new Mitsubishi 73" DLP in December. I had a hard time watching the Suns games broadcast in standard def. Now I'll be able to enjoy all the games in full HD glory!
Having just been through all this research myself, I'd buy one of these two if you're looking for a rear-projection TV:
Sony SXRD (comes in 50", 55", 60")

Samsung LED DLP (comes in 50", 56", 61")

I went with the Sony 50" (not a very big room) and have been very happy with it. I didn't research flat panels (plasma, LCD) at all, so you're on your own there.
I didn't consider any TV without 1080p resolution. The cheapest 50" flat panel with 1080p was out of my price range, IIRC. I bought my Sony SXRD 50" for $1700, and I couldn't be happier with it.I added another LCD flat panel to my home last weekend. LCD flat panels are the way to go IMHO more energy efficient and longer life than plasmas and have pretty ridiculous picture quality also. The prices are becoming very reasonable not sure why people would even buy projection TV's anymore? I picked up a 42" flat panel Visio for just under $1000 and couldn't be happier great picture definate upgrade from the 50" projection I put in my game room. Either way I am watching all the games!!!

just a couple examples for less than you paid the 1700 just saying shop around to those of you who have not yet purchased. Prices have greatly reduced on flat panels the last few years.
Never, NEVER buy an HDTV at Walmart. NEVER
Why?
Yes, you'll need to upgrade both your receiver and dish. The DirecTV HD dish is a little bigger than the regular one and points to a different satellite I believe.
I use Cox for my HD service and have been pretty satisfied with it.
Neither of these TVs support 1080p...http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5689391

After working at best buy for 2 years, working for a custom home architecture firm for two years, and having a father who designs home theaters, sony SXRD is the best dollar-to-orgasm picture you can get.
That and Mitsubishi is always a solid choice
