Houston gets workout from Suns

Jerry Brown, Tribune
Allan Houston, the former sharpshooter who turns 37 in just over two weeks, worked out on the Phoenix Suns practice court Thursday after the team’s practice session.

Houston is in the Valley to visit friend Grant Hill. But while he’s here, he also asked to be evaluated by the Suns medical staff, which has a reputation of reviving injured players’ careers. Hill and Shaquille O’Neal are the latest players to have their careers resurrected or improved by Aaron Nelson and his team, and the success stories have naturally drawn the attention of players who had careers cut short by injury.

Houston has played only one game – a six-minute stint with the Knicks at the beginning of this season – since retiring in 2005 because of chronic knee problems.

Houston’s six-year $100 million contract ended last season, when he was the second-highest paid player in the league ($20.7 million). He won’t play for the Suns, or anyone else, this season. But Phoenix did inquire about him last fall and if he were to ever improve enough to play, the Suns could be interested.

Dude, the guy can’t move anymore. He’d be a bigger defensive liability than Pike.

Besides, Bell, Barbosa, and Giricek have us pretty set at the SG position.

Thats not my idea of being "set."
We're basically elite at two spots(PG/PF) and average at the other three.
Upgrading the 2 or 3 with an upper echelon veteran that can do it all should be our highest off-season priority.

Is Aaron Nelson the head trainer? I would be interested in any links or info anyone had on them regarding their current practices and techniques. It's a huge part of the game nowdays that goes somewhat unappreciated.

Well, let’s just say we have three SGs who are a hell of a lot better than Allan Houston could possibly be.
We can say that. I'd actually like to see Bell stick around and eventually move to the bench as a guy who can ignite the defense and knock down some 3's.
IMO unless Barbosa gets some defensive coaching soon he's going to be a one-dimensional guy for his whole career. A tremendous waste of defensive potential with his speed, quickness, athleticism, and build.

Aaron talked a little bit about their techniques at the end but in very general terms. Contrary to what some people believe, they do not espouse any alternative / holistic / naturopathic therapy.

Oh....and not to mention the fact that he would have had to have been signed before March 1st in order to be eligable for the playoff roster. what are we going to do? bring him in for the last 7 games of the season?

this is just someone trying to make news out of nothing.

I think the confusion came with the term holism. The big focus they put on their therapy is how the entire body can be tweaked to deal with an injury instead of just the problem spot (ex: amare's knees were countered with hip and core exercises, shaqs hip was countered with butt muscle focus) which by definition is holistic, but many people default to thinking holism is an alternative spiritual thing and not a "big picture" focus.

No, that’s not true. As long as he is not on the roster of another team on or after March 1st, he is still eligible to join us for the playoffs. Remember Kevin Johnson?

Why is mine taken seriously but elindholm gets to bask is his clever ignorance?

Because veteran posters here know that when I seem ignorant, it has to be a joke.

(But also, re-read mojo's response to you, one word at a time.)

I think the Suns might be looking at Houston for a veteran minimum type player next season that could replace Pike but actually get some minutes if healthy. Also the Suns need to sign Giricek as well. If Giricek has a good playoff series he might go the way of TT.

1st team all nba defender, 6th man of the year, and for your 3rd string a guy who is contributing at a surprising level.

Some people are never satisfied.

It is NOT desirable to have a star at every position. Quality role players as Starters is essential to success.

You don't have to tell me about the value of having role players JC(as long as they can do things other than just score:hint>SUNS brass). My point was that out of the 5 starting positions we've got Nash who's elite and not going anywhere, AMARE who's elite and not going anywhere, and $HAQ who's solid enough but not going anywhere$. That leaves us with BELL who's jumpshot is very streaky and who appears to have lost a step due to age & oft injuries. He's a worthy starter don't get me wrong but an offseason upgrade at the 2 would be smart IMO.
That leaves us with HILL who's having a great year considering the expectations but he's not the answer at SF going into the future.
I'm just of the opinion that we look to upgrade the 2 or 3 spot this summer and hopefully we can keep BELL or Hill as an upgrade to our short bench.
