Here is what the suns currently have, according to the Suns office.

2006

Suns #1 Suns #2

The Suns are owed a #1 from Atlanta that is Lottery protected in 2006, and top 3 protected in 2007, no protection in 2008.

The Suns are owed another #1 from Atlanta that will come from Boston.
Atlanta receives a Boston 2006 first-round pick. (Antoine Walker trade 022405) The first-round draft pick the Hawks will receive is the lesser of the Celtics’ own 2006 first-round pick and the pick they obtained from the Lakers on August 13, 2004 as part of the Payton deal.

The Lakers pick is top 10 protected in 2006, top 5 protected 2007-2009, no protection in 2010.

I was told they have no knowledge of this below.
(Regardless of when the Hawks receive the pick, it is lottery protected.)

2007
Suns #1 -- Suns #2 -- Charlotte #2 for Voskuhl, conditional, probably will not get it.

2008
Suns #1 -- No #2 -- Cleveland #2 unconditional

2009
Suns #1 -- Suns #2 -- Golden Sates #2 unconditional

So, in the next 4 years the Suns have 6 first round picks (1 almost a guaranteed lottery pick, and one lottery to mid first round), and 7 second round picks. 13 picks total in 4 years.

Plus, we have a trade exception of 3.2 million.

Oh yeah, and the best thing of all--THE RIGHTS TO MILOS! ;)

All these picks, and so few holes to fill. Life is tough.

So what do we really need? We could stand to pick up a Steve Nash clone to develop for the future (although Barbosa is coming along fine--especially when Diaw is on the court).

We could stand some front court depth. Although I like Amare as a center and NOT a pf, we could pick up a big a Kurt Thomas clone to develop for the time when KT's really starts to drop off.

We could also start preparing for life without Shawn Marion. While Shawn is still relatively young, it never hurts to plan ahead.

We could trade picks for higher picks later, since we really don't need them right away. Wow, this is a great time for the Suns to have developmental league options. I wish we could stockpile 5 or 6 players in Albuquerque.

I agree with this idea, but just remember how this same scenario turned out when we traded the #7 to the Bulls two years ago. Yeah, there were other reasons for the trade, but I think we all felt that the Suns would at least be getting a pretty high lottery pick back from the Bulls the next year. I remember watching Chicago stumble out 0-9 or something and feeling very good about the pick. But, as we all know, that was the season the Bulls FINALLY played to their potential and made the playoffs, saddling us with a measly #21. Of course, we ended up trading the pick, but still. I've learned to approach pick swapping with caution, unless we're sending out late picks (like in the Barbosa trade) or getting actual players in return.

I'm feeling good about the Hawks picks, but never say never. Lightning could strike, and Atlanta might progress to being below average instead of just worthless. It happened to Chicago, and it's happening to the Clippers now (another odd story).

Trading for draft picks is always a gamble. Even lottery picks have less than a 50-50 chance of being a good player. The key is to always take quality players. If you have a need, it is usually better to trade for it than to reach in the draft.

Given the state of the west, I think the Lakers miss the playoffs. However given the state of the east, I think the Suns are going to end up with #14.

IMO the Team should keep Picks; unless of injury or the Team actually uses Trade Exception wisely - because the cap is pretty high and for once, the Team can Draft a Prospect... :D Of course, I hardly watch College Basketball now, so they'll have-to Draft without my help (newbies probably have no clue) but other than Barbosa and Stoudemire, I usually am upset Draft time of the last few years... and BTW I'm just a wannabe couch potato scout. :)

If there's a younger player, that's on a Rookie contract, possibly but the Team doesn't need anymore veterans and with the cap so high already, the Team will have-to do Trades with cap on mind.
