It's just peculiar that you're directing your ire at Gortat, we'd be winless this season without him. Dragic has clearly moved into the top spot but the gap between Gortat and our 3rd best player has been huge. If you're going to rail on him every time he has a disappointing game then you might as well get in the practice because it will happen several more times this season. He won't always be playing against the Lakers front line nor will he be playing a back to back following an incredible hard-fought comeback victory but he'll have some down nights anyway. We have two very good players and a good pair of backup guards and pretty much nothing else.

Steve

I'm not railing on him, I just wish he could show up for us in big game situations. We're gonna need that from him.

But I think that more than anything getting O'Neal back will help. Gortat should not be playing close to 40 mins a game like he's been doing this season.

How did O'Neal play last night by the way?

Although the Suns chances of beating the Lakers was slim, their chance went out the window after Gentry removed Tucker from the Game after Peace and Tucker got double technicals and Gentry pulled him. Peace looked like he was going to go off completely. Gentry should have let them go after it further instead of letting Peace have his way. Peace clearly disliked the way Tucker guarded him.

I don't think Scola is that far away from Gortat. Scola is a very good offensive player. Gortat is better but the gap between he and Scola isn't huge.

I think the gap is huge. IMO, there aren't many teams that Scola would get minutes with let alone start for. I think his value is a mirage. AFAIC, Brown and Telfair have been our 3rd and 4th best player followed by Tucker. Luis beats out Beasley and Morris but he's near the bottom of our rotation, IMO.

I might have pulled Tucker too. We need him for the rest of the season and Artest is never more than a missed dose from climbing a tower with a couple of M-16's and a town's supply of ammo. My motto, let rabid dogs lie, even if it costs you a basketball game.

On most things we agree but on this we completely disagree. Scola is one of those players that Cotton used to call a dirt worker... he would bring his lunch pail to work. Scola's style of play may not be pretty but he is very effective. If Scola could be traded this season I see a long line of teams wanting him. Oh well, he can't be traded this season to find out.

Yeah, I usually hesitate to say much about him because I dislike the guy so intensely (as a player) that I tend to focus on everything he does out there and no one's performance holds up to that kind of observation. I don't want to do to him what a few people here did with Nash and Amare. They were so incensed by those two that all they ever saw were the negatives. But, try as I might, I can't help seeing an awful lot of negatives with Scola out there. He does some things well and he's certainly crafty but his defense is scary bad if you focus on him.

I think that Scola is, overall, the third best player on the team. His defense leaves a lot to be desired, but he works hard, he can score in a variety of ways, and he is an extremely smart player. I actually think that a lot of teams would love to have Scola on their roster. If he is your second or third best player though, you're in trouble unless the other four starters are amazing defenders.

Edit:
My list would look something like this:
Dragic
Gortat
Scola
Telfair
Brown
Dudley
Beasley
Morris

On a related note, I continue to be impressed with Telfair. I would actually really like to see him start at PG while moving Dragic to 2.

The two absolute prerequisite skills that every big man need to be a reliable contributor to any good team are 1) toughness and 2) good hands. As the playoff hunt gears up, the games get more spirited, more competitive, and MUCH more physical. Imagine this completely commonplace scenario: your big man sets a high screen for your point guard and rolls toward the basket; he catches a pass in the paint at about 9 feet from the hoop, and immediately, there are 2 smaller guys swiping at his hands and 1 big man bumping him with his chest. If our big man here is soft, that chest bump is going to throw him off balance, and he doesn't want to travel, so he is forced to put the ball on the floor as he shuffles a bit to regain proper footing; this is when those two smaller guys have the best chance of getting their hands on the basketball - maybe not enough to get a clean strip, but enough that when our big guy tries to pass the ball back out to the wing, the pass is slower and far less accurate than it needs to be, and so instead of punishing the opposition for leaving their primary assignments to converge into the paint, Jared Dudley has to move a bit to catch the ball, and even then it's far from his shooting pocket. Instead of an open three, Dudley now has to make a play, has to make decisions while his defender is right up in his chest, hands and feet active (because remember, this game has playoff ramifications and everyone is working their butts off to get a W).

See, in this case, what our big guy did doesn't seem so terrible. He didn't turn it over, dribble it off his foot, pick up an offensive foul, or miss a contested 9-footer. But he turned what could have been an advantageous situation into a scramble.

Well, if you guys are right about Scola, we're in a lot of trouble. Okay, we're probably in a lot of trouble anyway. When is the last time a healthy player was amnestied (or bought out) and then became the 3rd best player on his next team. Houston let him go for a reason and it wasn't just to clear space IMO. I guess we'll see as the season wears on.

Well, no matter how it turns out with Scola, the Suns are lucky to have him with Frye out if the Suns are looking to be somewhat competitive.

I think they let him go because they had to clear space because they were willing to take Howard without any agreement/ guarantee from him that he will sign the extension.

And, we ARE in a lot of trouble. This is a bad team. I really don't think most people realize just how terrible this team is.

We realize it! It's just that we'd feel better not watching our home team and not rooting for them than watching and rooting, but constantly reminding ourselves how terrible they are.

So we watch and root and look for glimmers of hope that we'll see something to make us feel good. The ironic thing is that Alvin Gentry, who will be the fall guy at the end of the season, is so good that he keeps hope alive.

Am I the only one not bugged at all about the Suns struggles this year? I hope not.. It's still fun to watch them play for the most part.

I'm enjoying watching the Suns play but it's primarily because I have no expectations for them and I'm focusing more on individual players than the actual score. I really like watching Goran play, he's quickly moving up my favorite player list. There just aren't that many PG's that are outplaying him and I can't think of a single opponent that clearly outmatches him.

Me neither. Dragic is slowly emerging as a top tier PG. Just hope they get a scorer to go alongside him soon.

Yeah, I keep looking at this team and thinking how much better we would be if Harden had waited till the offseason and signed with us. We'd be a quality power forward away from having a chance to win it all. Without a true go-to scorer, we're going to lose more games than our talent warrants. I'm not saying we're talented but we have the 1 and the 5 solved and those are often the two hardest spots to fix.
