The Mavericks are very very good at home. They shoot, move without the ball, and are very agressive on the offensive glass. It was not surprising the Mavs won, but It thought the Suns would play better.
I did have a couple of observations:
First, the Suns continue to struggle against zones. The Suns had a lot of turnovers when the tried to force the ball into Amare. The Suns interior passing looked bad, although I will give them credit for trying.
They looked better in the second half when Jacobsen was in, because the Mavs were reluctant to leave him open. The Suns actually got to within 9 points, but then could not stop the Mavs shooting.
Second, JJ was the point guard through most of the second half. He made some mistakes but did better than either Barbosa or Eisley. The Suns have experimented with using JJ at point in the past, but maybe they are serious about it now. We may have seen the last of Eisley. He was in when the Mavs built their big lead and looked terrible again.
JJ still hasn't learned that it is OK to just carry the ball through the paint like a halfback since the refs rarely call traveling. He hit a couple of long jumpers near the end, but overall he needs to drive to the basket when there are defenders on him.
The Suns have to get more agressive on the boards. It isn't just blocking out, it is attacking the ball and not just waiting for the ball to come their way. Harvey actually played pretty well because of his agressiveness.
Jake had another anemic performance: one rebound in 14 minutes with 4 personal fouls. By contrast, Harvey had 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in 8 minutes.
None of the rookies showed much. Lampe looked very tentative, Cabakapa lacked agressiveness, and Barbosa had his second bad game in a row. Dice seemed very tentative in four minutes and White did not play.
The Mavs only shot 41.7% from the field and only 20% for three while the Suns shot 45% from the field. But the Mavs outreboudned the Suns by 9 and generated 19 turnovers. The bottom line is that the Suns did not play hard enough or smart enough to beat the Mavs.
