The Phoenix Suns burned the Utah Jazz 89-84 in an overtime thriller in the opening game of the 2003 Reebok Rocky Mountain *****. In the final quarter the Jazz opened the quarter on a 13-6 run and tied the game at 68 points. DeShawn Stevenson hit a jump shot with 3:15 left in the game to give the Jazz a two point lead, their first lead since early in the game. Utah led by as many as five late in the game however it was not enough as the Suns tied the game at 81 at the end of regulation.

DeShawn Stevenson led all scorers with 27 points on 12-30 from the field while Zendon Hamilton came off the bench for Utah and added 16 points and Michael Ruffin recorded the only double-double on the night for the Jazz with 13 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Casey Jacobsen led the Suns with 23 points while Joe Johnson tallied 20 points and a game high 10 assists. Both Borchardt and Lopez missed the entire 2002-03 season with injuries.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday as the Jazz take on the Denver Nuggets at 8:00 p.m. and the Suns will take on the Portland Trail Blazers at 6:00 p.m.

I don't like his 6 turnovers, but Zarko's line of 13 points and 8 rebounds in his first american game looked pretty good.

Nice game by JJ and it's good to see Casey actually hitting some shots.

Who's coaching the RMR team? Iavaroni? Talk about a small rotation...

As a Phoenix Suns fan you have to be happy with that box score. I only wish I could have watched and seen how Jacobsen and Cabarkapa played defensively.

Ugh, the Suns got slaughtered on the boards, 41-28. I know it's just a summer league game, but still.

On the other hand, you have to like 50+% shooting. And hey, Tsakalidis had three blocks! :)

Sorry, what is this, Jake's 3rd season? And only 6pts, 3rbs in a summer league game?

He just isn't going to amount to much is he...Gambo and Ash were talking the other day about how this is probably his last season with the team...unless they gave him an extension or something that Ash was thinking they did.

Anyways, I wish he'd turn a corner somehow.

It's his fourth season. I agree that it doesn't look like he'll ever be a quality starting center, even though "it's only one summer league game."

But ... I do think the Suns will keep him around. He'll be fairly cheap, and what better options will they have?

It was his first game in a LOOOONG while.

Still Casey Jacobsen and Big Jake shouldn't be outrebounded 19-5 by Stevenson and Ruffin.

Is Frank the coach of our summer league team????

I also think that many DNP coaches decision is a lot, especially for a summer league game.........

I don't think FJ is coaching. I forget who is doing it though, it could be D'Antoni, Iavaroni or Webber.

I think you are right. He's the guy they interviewed on Arizona Sports Report after the game.

I don't have a problem with the DNPs either. I'll just feel badly for some of the young players if they never get any time. I do want Cabarkapa, Jacobsen, and Barbosa to get significant playing time though.

I just saw a few clips on the news. Zarko was handling the ball on a fast break and he looked very smooth. He dished it to Jacobson, who hit a three (or was it a 2?) :D

Zarko also hit a nice looking three. Nice game by Jacobson and Joe Johnson also.

Noel Felix, 10 points in just 17 minutes. Felix had only 3 boards, but all of them Offensive boards?? This Jason Hart guy had some decent stats and was allowed to play 36 minutes. I know Hart joined the team up in Utah, other than that he is a question mark. Felix and Hart are two big question marks. Would have been nice to see and hear the comments made about them. I figure there is one roster spot left open for the Suns. Since they don't want to take on more cap money, it could well be filled by a low pay guy from the summer leagues. Would be nice if the local paper would have SOMETHING about it. Instead it's the KOBE sports section. I am so over the Kobe hype by now. Who cares. Let them go to court, get a verdict, THEN start mulling over how it will affect him and the Lakers.

Some observations from Jazzfans who were at the game

Something I thoght was VERY cool... Amare Stoudemire show'd up just for the fans. He signed autogrpahs (I'll have to remember a pen tomorrow) and he sat with the fans, shared candy, took pictures. This is a classy guy. BTW DeShawn's Pistol Pete Maravich throw back was tight! Amare had on a Steelers #12 jersey.

Hart was a punk, but played great D. He was all over Lopez and obviously the refs sucked. Joe Johnson and Pavlovic had some trash talking going, which was fun to watch.

...as he helped out with the full court press that Phoenix ran almost the whole game.

The people that I was mostly impressed with on the Suns was Jason Hart (altough I didn't like his overall attitude), Casey Jacobsen (the kid knows how to shoot), Joe Johnson (played an excellent all-around game), and Noel Felix (who had rough moments, but scapped for points inside).

I was impressed with Hart on defense and Felix's ability to get open. Zarko seemed to find a way to get to the ball and he was really trying hard. Defensively, I couldn't really provide a lot of feedback but your boys did ok. Well they won despite a Jazz comeback so I guess they did a little better than ok

Amare was giving out autographs like candy yesterday, and even waited around when a middle-aged guy came up and asked for an autograph when the guy didn't have a pen.

I was sitting at the end of press row, and Amare interacted with the fans a lot and I was very, VERY impressed with him.

He seems like a very funny guy, nice guy, and besides, has a lot of bling blings (diamond watch, ring, cross etc...)
