I noticed you are from Melbourne. I am retired Navy who applied for a DFAS job in Melbourne. I am looking for a place to land in Florida and would like a local's opinion regarding employment prospects for retired vet with accounting degree and MBA. Also curious about housing prices. Say like going price for a 1300 square foot house/condo.

Yep... It's why I don't get all that excited about "signing day"... Way too many flameouts and lower star recruits who go on to big things.
It's all a crap shoot. I'll gladly wait and see what the win-loss record is after the first few games...

Nate Solder is the lone first round pick among New England's starters on offense.

Well, the Brevard area is pretty slow as far as professional jobs. There aren't many corps based here, like there are in Orlando. There is the military presence with the Space Center and Patrick AFB. The cuts to the space program have hurt though. Alot of people that live here are retired or work at home, like me. It's a different lifestyle. The surfing and fishing are good. Not much nightlife. Home prices are cheap. You can buy a 1300 sf house a couple blocks from the ocean for probably as low as $150,000 - that would be Satellite Beach just south of the base for an older house that needs some work. Indialantic and Melbourne Beach maybe $220,000 to $350,000. That's all beachside. Inland is alot cheaper. If you can find work in Brevard, it's a really chill place to live.

As far as jobs and everything else really, there's much, much, more going on in Orlando - downtown and around the attractions. Alot of corps are based there. The only complaint I had when I lived there was the traffic and the crime was starting to get bad.

Thanks for help. It sounds perfect. I am going to make major push at Patrick. Any idea if Patrick is in hiring mode?

I'm not sure this is really the criterion to use when judging the star rankings. Aren't the rankings given to predict how well high school players will perform at the college level?

I asked one of the guys who ranks basketball players for Scout that question and he said they are projecting. It was because in the story on their new rankings they talked about certain kids playing really well and moving up from a 4 to a 5 star etc. I asked I thought you guys said before you're projecting not ranking them now, so why is playing well now moving someone up.

The response was it's not just that they're playing well, it's that when playing well they showed ability or potential that moved them up.

With football it's even harder to rank I suspect, my take is they are actually ranking them right now and then claiming they are projecting them. If you run a 4.2 40 and play CB my guess is you're probably going to be very highly rated whether you can play the ball in the air or not when in HS.

I know the guy who runs, used to run, high school basketball rankings for Ohio kids and Midwest kids. His name is Reggie Rankin and I think he did some work for ESPN as well. Anyway, these guys running the "star" ranking system aren't adverse to being "influenced" to give certain players higher ranking than they deserve.

We were having beers awhile, long time, ago and he flat out told me that parents will offer him money to get their kid ranked higher. His response was, "sure, what do I care if the kid is ranked 7th in Ohio or 15th".

Now, the kids have to have some talent or the lists would be hogwash but there's very little difference between a 5 star and a 3 star player, especially in football.

Further proof to take star ratings with a grain of salt:

ESPN.com’s Brian Bennett offered an interesting breakdown of how the members of the all-Big Ten team ranked as high-school prospects, showing that no five-star prospects made the all-conference team.
Of the seven four-star prospects to make the team, four are from Ohio State — quarterback J.T. Barrett, guard Pat Elflein, defensive end Joey Bosa and cornerback Doran Grant.
Three-star recruits dominated the team — there were 14, including Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon, the Heisman Trophy runner-up. There were two two-star recruits, and three players who weren’t ranked at all.
