But they lost so how valuable was he?

I agree they could not cover him but the MVP always goes to the winning team in the Super Bowl.

Russ,

I don't think that he was arguing that Welker should have somehow received the MVP, while being on the losing team.

I remember Welker tying the receptions record, did he break it?

Sorry I thought Wally was saying he should have been MVP, guess I misunderstood. He is amazing though you literally can't cover Welker with one player, it's impossible.

Part of his success though was the Giants dropped coverage to take away the downfield throw. Notice how rarely Brady threw, or much less compelted, anything beyond 10 yards? Basically the Giants said, "We'll let you have Welker, but we're going to take away Moss."

true. I guess I mean after the catch. They kept saying how much the giants coaches stressed that they had to stop Welker after the catch but repeatedly he got the ball and then found a way to get the first down.

Moss was basically a non factor but I think largely because of the Giants pass rush. They simply couldn't get enough time to run the deep routes they like to run for Moss, Brady always got hit or sacked on those plays.

The other guy who I thought was huge in this game despite his drop for an INT was Steve Smith the ex USC WR. For a kid who missed most of the season hurt he was really a factor in this game. He and Tyree had to really surprise the Pats.

Yep, Welker was slippery after the catch. I'm sure the Giants plan was to come up and make the tackle after giving up the short throw. Welker has taken his game up about three levels from where he was with the Dolphins.

I'm not surprised about Smith. I thought he'd be a perfect #2 or #3 NFL WR. The guy made so many big time catches in big time games in college.

Chuck Howley won the MVP even though his Cowboys lost to the Colts. 37 years ago. Still.

I could. He didnt deserve it. That D-line was out of there mnds and absolutely should have gotten it.

He threw 2 4th Q TDs, including the game winner on their last possession. You still need points to win.

The whole defense deserves credit for keeping it winnable, but without the Giants O scoring points, the Giants D keeping the Pats at 14 wouldn't mean much

If you could give it to two you can give it to 3. Tuck, Umenyiora, and Strahan. All more deserving than ELI. JMO.

If Brady got MVP after the 2002 Rams-Pats SB for 1 good drive that nets a FG, Eli certainly deserves it after a nearly flawless 4th Quarter

I won't concede anything to Eli. The defense won that game for them. Maybe if the offense moved the ball more consistently, the defense wouldn't have worn down. Eli is an average QB. A Kyle Boller type.

I rarely contribute to mvp discussions of any kind. Football is the ultimate team game. It took the whole Giants team to beat the Patriots.

If it was up to me, no mvp award of any kind would be awarded in football at any level of play.

It is strange that sports that are team based choose to single out one player as the most valuable.

Wes Welker. The most dominant player in that game.
He is smart, fast, catches the ball, overall a very good player. That being said he plays like a girl. Anytime he thinks there might be contact he dives into the ground. Reminds me of the rams receivers and there well known fear of contact. What is funny is the way the pats handled that. In the Super Bowl years back, the DB's were instructed to punish the receiver on the ground. He is a small guy so maybe that is the only way he can survive. Football players should play with guts, I geuss Q has spoiled me with his never say die effort.

From the theater of the absurd. That guy is about as tough as they come. He catches the ball over the middle. BTW, how many times has Q sat out injured? Nice to be macho, I guess, but Welker managed to survive a season injury free and ended up catching about 160 balls in pre season, regular season, and post season. Forget that he returns punts and has guys trying to rip his head off. WW ain't a wussy, by far.

From TMQ;

In successive postseason contests, the Giants' front seven ate the lunch of the league's third-best offensive line (Dallas), then the second-best (Green Bay), and finally, in the Super Bowl, the best. What a performance! The Giants' front seven should, as a group, have been named MVP.

Q gets the extra yards that welker doesn't, because welker is doing his diving into the safety of the turf. welker can't be descibed as tough, as he does catch over the middle and promptly dives to avoid contact. What is funny is he did this all year, early on in the season I pointed it out to my friend(pats fan), and it started driving him crazy. Now it was a big joke among our friends, and during the Super Bowl, the whole party was calling it out. I think he is a very talented receiver, but as far as mvp please, he is the third option as moss and stalllworth took the attention of the DB's, as he caught his five yard passes.
