If a team is looking for a quality defensive tackle, they should strongly consider Southern California's Manuel Wright in the coming supplemental draft. Wright, who made himself available for the draft because of academic concerns, is a big-time player. Some scouts are worried he wasn't as productive as he should have been at USC, but he played behind some good players, such as Eagles first-round pick Mike Patterson. Wright was a big-time recruit coming out of Long Beach Poly, but he had to go to junior college before enrolling at USC. He eventually worked his way in as a starter last season when Shaun Cody, a second-round pick this year, moved to end. Wright had a big sack against Cal late and he played well in the Orange Bowl. At 6-feet-6, 310 pounds, he is worth a second-round pick in the supplemental draft. Any team doing so would forfeit their second-round pick in next April's regular draft. He's worth the risk, although he has to get into a situation where the coach stays on him a bit.

Would it be to far fetched for us to gamble a 3rd rounder on this guy. Seems like a good gamble to be Docketts future DT partner if Wright really is 310+ lbs.

Never really paid attention to this guy, so who has any first hand knowledge on him, and is a 3rd or even a 2nd rounder that big of a reach for him.

Or should we not take the gamble and try for one of the many good big men(there will be a lot) coming out in the 2006 draft if we still need one:

Rodrique Wright, 6-5, 320, Texas
Gabe Watson, 6-4, 335, Michigan
LeKevin Smith, 6-2, 310, Nebraska
Orien Harris, 6-4, 300, Miami
Steve Fifita, 6-0, 322, Utah
Anthony Montgomery, 6-5, 315, Minnesota
Gerald Anderson, 6-2, 315, Georgia
Kwakou Robinson, 6-4, 325, Virginia
*Haloti, Ngata, 6-5, 345, Oregon

joeshmo,

I really think there will be a feeding frenzy on Wright and that he would not make it to the third round. As a second rounder......I dunno.

Remember one very important thing......who ever drafts him in June HAS TO BE ABLE to fit him into this years rookie pool, so where he ends up will be influenced by whatever team has disposable rookies to package up and create cap space under the rookie pool allocation.

The rookie cap does not stay the same. If a player is drafted in the supplemental draft the NFLPA will raise the rookie pool allocation amounts accordingly for taht team. So no rookies you already draft will get the shaft.

Houstons rookie cap was raised when they took Hollings a few years ago.

So if a team drafts Wright their rookie pool amount would be raised by the NFLPA. So that wont be an issue for any teams except for the ones who already are having a hard time getting enough cap space for the rookies they already have, which is about a 1/3 of the league right now, but not us.

(e) In the event that the NFL holds a supplemental draft in addition to its annual Draft in advance of the next League Year's Draft, adjustments shall be made to the Entering Player Pool and Rookie Allocation in a manner to be agreed upon by the NFL and the NFLPA.

If our coaches like him I would love to take him in the supplemental draft. Our draft spot will be at least 10-15 spots lower next year so we might as well take advantage of our position while be can. If you can get a good player this year why wait untill next?

Ah.....there's the rub......we don't seem to have enough info to determine just how good he is or how much of a risk it is......or where he might be next year given the real depth at DT in 2006

He and the other 2 guys going into the supp draft are supposed to workout at the end of the month right before the July 10th draft date.

The two other guys being WR - Roscoe Crosby and Kentucky LB Chad Johnson.

But the workouts should help to ease the risk a little bit. Not completly of course but it will answer some questions on teams minds and they will be able to interview them as well.

Roscoe Parish was drafted by the Buffalo Bills with their second round pick this year. I do recall a WR declaring for the Sspplemental draft but can't remember his name.

When drafting for the supplemental do teams pick by their position in the April draft, or the position they were supposed to be in if they hadn't trasded their picks or forfeited them. For example, would NE have the 95th pick or would we have it?

It is lottery style. Sort of like the NBA. Each team is slotted into where they would have picked in the first round, even if they traded that pick away. For example The Broncos traded the 25th pick in the first round to the Redskins, The Redskins woldnt have that pick, the Broncos would for the purposes of the lottery. Think of it as if the first round where to take place and there were no trades past or present that took place, just the normal order of things.

Now with every team having a pick from 1-32 they then each get a certian amount of lottery balls with the 49ers getting the most amount of balls and the Pats getting the least, the more lottery balls you have the more of a chance you got of getting the 1st pick. Then the order is decided just like the NBA's lottery. So in theory the Pats could end up with the first pick and the 49ers the last pick, but it is highly unlikely.

Then once the order is set the NFL calls the teams in order and each team either gives a yes or no. They get a no they move on to the next in order. They do this for the whole first round, then move on to the second round and follow the same exact order of the lottery again and start the process all over for each round. So each team has a pick in each round slotted according to the lottery, 7 chacnes in all to say yes or no on a player, once in each round.

Wright is just as advertised, very talented kid who basically underachieved at USC and then flunked out of school. Lot of tools, but so far his career has been waylayed by his academics.

He's physically more talented than either Cody or Patterson but was nowhere near as productive.

His USC bio listed him at 290, a story in the USC paper said he's around 320 now but that's because he's out of shape. Spent a year at Long Beach JC (not playing) to get his grades up for USC so he's a 3rd year soph.

Interesting question on what NFL teams think of a kid who the USC article says accumulated 54 "negative points" in his last semester at USC by cutting classes, missing tests, and missing tutoring sessions. Wright had a very slim chance of passing enough classes to retain his eligibility and reportecly skipped at least one of his finals, and announced he was going pro before he even got his test results. Found an online USC fan site that says Wright drove the coaches nuts his freshman year, showed up overweight, was too inconsistent, but was just so talented they stuck with him and expected a huge year from him this year.

Someone will take him, USC article says one NFL coach said probably in the 3rd to 5th round.

Why would we be interested in another player that it appears we have to push to achieve his potential? He sounds very lazy. Hasn't this been the exact issue we've been having with Wendall Bryant? Why would we use a second or third round pick on someone like that when, for the past two years, we've been getting highly motivated and talented players through the fourth round? If he lasts until the sixth or seventh, maybe the fifth, then take a shot.

DG has shown in the past that he's willing to gamble on a player if he has enough potential. Randy Moss had issues and worked out, Underwood had issues and didn't work out. I'm not sure about other players that he drafted in Minnesota but if Green thinks he can get through to a player he'll take him. Our 2 stud defensive rookies from last year had some issued and weren't considered safe picks but we were right about them and everyone else wasn't. Our 4th round pick this year, Elton Brown, wasn't as dominant in college as he should have been. A bunch of guys we've drafted lately have had some questions although not to the extent that Wright does. I think it's enough that we can't rule out G&G taking a gamble on this guy.

The NFL changed the system. It works like a reverse auction now.

if we were going to spend a draft pick on a big talented dt with questions off the field we would have gone for anttaj hawthorne in the fifth round.

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on where Antaaj was on our draft board. We tend to stick to our board and Antaaj was not as high on our board as Mitchell probably was. Plus Antaaj's and Wright have two different issues. Antaaj has a motivation and drug issue while Wright has a motivation issue.

wright also has a thinkin problem if he's flunked out of school while on the "football player schedule". it's true that we may have taken mitchell simply because he was higher on our board but i can't see any scenario where denny spends a second rounder on a guy with big question marks off the field and very little playing time on the field considering how much heh likes his draft picks. i still believe that if we coveted a big dt that much we would have taken hawthorne.
