Surface

Airs: Monday 8:00 PM on NBC (60 mins)
Premiers: September 19, 2005
Genre: Science-Fiction, Action/Adventure

Ever wonder what life would be like if a new form of sea life began to appear in locales all over the earth?

“Surface” is an expansive drama and undersea adventure that centers on the appearance of mysterious sea creatures in the deep ocean -- and tracks the lives of four characters. They are: Daughtery Carstarphen (Lake Bell, “Boston Legal”), the young oceanographer who discovers the secret; Dr. Aleksander Cirko (Rade Sherbedgia, “Snatch”), the government scientist who tries to keep things under wraps; Richard Owen (Jay R. Ferguson, “Judging Amy”), the Louisiana fisherman who loses his brother in a suspicious diving accident; and Miles (Carter Jenkins, “CSI: New York”), the young boy who brings the creatures ashore.

The mystery ensnares a spectrum of people, including naval officers in the South Antarctic Sea, a family in San Diego, scientists from the Oceanographic Institute in Monterey, and fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. The seemingly innocent creatures they find are beautiful, and kids may even want to play with them -- but is there something more to them? One thing’s for sure – they’re full of surprises as viewers embark on this journey to discover what might be lurking in the sea.

“‘Surface’ is entertainment for all ages in the tradition of ‘E.T.’ and ‘Close Encounters,’” said Josh and Jonas Pate, the series’ creators and executive producers. “It will have action, suspense, thrills and heart as we track the fantastic into the familiar.”

The Pates continued: “We’ll follow the teenager as he raises the sea monster in a suburban garage. We’ll admire the young dedicated oceanographer as she takes unbelievable risks to get to the bottom of the mystery. We’ll feel the grief and obsession of the every-man from Louisiana, and answer the questions surrounding the mysterious Dr. Cirko. This series will plumb the depths of suspense.”

“Something is down there.”

“Surface” is from NBC Universal Television Studio and was created by Josh and Jonas Pate (“Dragnet”), who also serve as executive producers.

NOTE: The original title of the series was Fathom but was changed after it came to light that the rights to the name were owned by another company.

We're really looking forward to this one.

Too late. I gotta watch Threshhold! I can only watch so many series every week. This one should have debuted earlier! :D

This looks interesting, but I can only watch so many shows....

What did you think of Threshold?

Wow, I really liked Surface...almost more than Threshold...seemed to be a bit more realistic...if any of these shows can be.

I really liked the first episode. The only bad thing is after it ended I did a brain freeze and totally forgot about Prisonbreak. Only saw the last 10 minutes.

Surface is using the Lost formula a bit teasing us with what the creatures look like, but they gave us enough looks to make it interesting.

The one thing that bugged me, when the dude from Louisiana is being dragged away after shooting the thing with his speargun, why doesn't he just let go of the gun? Was it somehow wrapped around his arm it just didn't make any sense to me that he'd hang on like that.

I think it had to be wrapped around his arm, and maybe he froze since they both looked freaked out and probably it happened too fast for him to think clearly?

I am looking forward to it next week though...

Threshhold had a better ending than Surface. I saw the end of surface, and I gotta say threshhold ended with more questions. Interesting about sound being used to program the brain, since I have seen some scientific shows that show experiments attempting to do this. Also, the DNA triple helix thing is cool!

Yeah they did a close up of him tightening a strap from the gun around his wrist while they were getting ready to leave the boat. I thought the first episope was very good also. Did they ever show what the kid did with the creature after he wrapped it up in the shower curtain.

No...but this week the previews said something about the kid maybe being the first to try and communicate with it or something...

Anyone still watching this show?

I know it's not the best, but somehow I'm still hooked...and next week is the season finale.

We still like the show in spite of the awful acting of Lake Bell. Bleh. Her lines sound forced and she's not very believable as an oceanographer.

Well...interesting finale...not like a ton of stuff happened, but was pretty cool that they finally all met up together. Should make next season interesting.

Also was curious why Miles was even afraid of the tsunami considering he can obviously swim and possibly breathe under water...

Not the greatest show out there, but I hope they come back next year :)

I've been following this show. How come the kid's pet has stayed so small? I'm guessing the big "monsters" have been quietly growing at the bottom of the sea. Did the scientist goonie chick say when they were made?

The kid's monster has grown though, it used to be smaller.

No idea when they were made yet though
