CHAPEL HILL — UNC women's basketball is Birmingham-bound, heading to their second Sweet 16 in four years after a grinding win over No. 6 West Virginia, 58-49, for their final game in Carmichael.
The Tar Heels shot woefully for most of their second-round win, but they relied on their gritty defense down the stretch and cause problems for a high-octane West Virginia offense that only made 13 out of 54 attempted shots and only two 3-pointers on the night.
The Tar Heels are set for a rematch against No. 2 Duke (28-7) in Birmingham, Alabama and for the first time ever in the NCAA Tournament. They'll face another defensively sound team who are coming off of an ACC Tournament championship and a similar grinded-out win against No. 10 Oregon on Sunday afternoon.
The season's series between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils is even at one a piece. In the first matchup on Jan. 9, then-No. 19 North Carolina handed then-No. 14 Duke their first conference loss of the season in overtime, 53-49 behind a 10-point, 12 rebounds double-double from Alyssa Ustby. The Blue Devils sought revenge in February at Cameron Indoor Stadium and took down the then-No. 8 Tarheels, 68-53 despite a 17-point effort from freshman Lanie Grant.
