From the players brokering back-room deals in Washington to the men toiling in the oil fields of the Persian Gulf, the film's multiple storylines weave together to illuminate the human consequences of the fierce pursuit of wealth and power. As a career CIA operative (George Clooney) begins to uncover the disturbing truth about the work he has devoted his life to, an up-and-coming oil broker (Matt Damon) faces an unimaginable family tragedy and finds redemption in his partnership with an idealistic Gulf prince (Alexander Siddig). A corporate lawyer (Jeffrey Wright) faces a moral dilemma as he finesses the questionable merger of two powerful U.S. oil companies, while across the globe, a disenfranchised Pakistani teenager (Mazhar Munir) falls prey to the recruiting efforts of a charismatic cleric. Each plays their small part in the vast and complex system that powers the industry, unaware of the explosive impact their lives will have upon the world.

George Clooney considered killing himself

By Jeannette Walls

George Clooney says he considered killing himself because the pain from a movie injury was so great.

The actor’s woes came from the filming of “Syriana,” a political thriller based on the memoirs of ex-CIA agent Robert Baer.

“There was this scene where I was taped to a chair and getting beaten up and we did quite a few takes. The chair was kicked over and I hit my head,” Clooney said in an interview on National Public Radio. “I tore my dura, which is the wrap around my spine which holds in spinal fluid.” Clooney says part of the problem was that he’d put on weight for the role.

Despite the agony he was in, Clooney ruled out taking painkillers because there’s a history of addiction in his family, but the pain got so great, that he considered suicide. Clooney’s complaints were dismissed until spinal fluid started leaking from his nose. He has since had numerous operations.

"Before the surgery it was the most unbearable pain I’ve ever been through, literally where you’d go, ‘well, you’ll have to kill yourself at some point, you can’t live like this,’” Clooney said. He still suffers short term memory problems because of the injury. “It’s probably the worst year personally I have ever had. My brother-in-law died of a heart attack aged 45, my grandma fell, broke her hip and died this summer. And my dog got attacked by a rattlesnake and killed.”

Saw this movie over the weekend. It is indeed, a real "thinker" (you find yourself still thinking about it days after you've seen it.)

Absolutely terrible movie. Jumps around way to much without tying anything together. Way to slow to develop. Nothing suspenseful or fast moving to keep you interested at all. Subpar acting performances all the way around IMO. BIG WASTE OF $9.50

Wow, this is like the worst review of a great movie I've ever seen :)

This movie was awesome...there was plenty of suspense towards the end, which is where suspense usually is, and how can you say Clooney or Damon gave subpar performances?

Everyone in this movie was great.

The point of the jumping around, was to show you how all these stories and people are connected to the same thing, but none of them is really aware of what everyone else is doing.

You have the oil giants, the CIA, the CIA agent, the king and prince of the oil country and the worker who is recruited by terrorists...

I mean, it was just a flat out great movie...

You do have to pay attention though, because it's easy to get confused.

I didn't dislike it as much as Shane, but I didn't pay 9.50 for it either. I really didn't like the pace, far too slow, and too convoluted. Not bad but not what I was expecting.

I just watched it. It definitely was a very complex movie. Following the various stories was difficult at times, but I really enjoyed the movie.
