I had this discussion with my daughter who is graduating with an animation degree in May when I took her to artists row at comic con. She set me straight. She said Anime has been co-opted to mean a style of animation that originated in Japan. It's global now and doesn't refer specifically to Japan any longer. She did say their are "sub-styles" that are more prominent in Japan like Shojo and and Shonen. She named and showed me a bunch of the different styles of art that were there but I couldn't keep up with it all. I was lucky I remembered those two but I don't recall what they mean.
To dad it's just all animation of some sort. LOL.
