Just 24 hours after the announcement by Universal that they would be premiering the first ten minutes of their horror remake Dawn of the Dead on the USA Network monday, Warner Brothers stated that they will be taking a similar route with their psychological thriller, Taking Lives, which also opens nationwide on March 19th. Starring Angelina Jolie, Ethan Hawke and Kiefer Sutherland, the eerie film based on the book by Michael Pye, is about the hunt for a serial killer who takes the identities of his victims. The first nine minutes and eight seconds of the movie, which show the killer's back story as well as the movie's creepy title sequence, will debut on the Taking Lives website next week.
Producer Mark Canton, Chairman and CEO of Atmosphere Entertainment, was thrilled to be able to debut the movie for online movie fans, commenting on the decision: "We're going to do the premiere online next week, which we think is a very strong opportunity to show the college age 18-year-old men and women the type of velocity and fun they're in for, without exposing what happens in the movie, because none of the primary cast is in that. We're very excited about that, and it's a big opportunity for us in terms of going online this way. We came up with this idea with Don Buckley, the head of Warner Brothers' internet division, who is ahead of the curve and they do a terrific job. We decided we wanted to do something that we thought could expand the audience that way. You know the competition is always great, so we wanted to find the broadest possible reach out of the box."
Co-producer Bernie Goldmann agreed. "The movie is the best advertising for the movie, so we want people to get a little taste of it, and hopefully, they want to see the rest. There's undoubtedly a huge connection between people on the internet and movie fans."
