George Paton has done it again.
The contract details for safety Talanoa Hufanga have arrived and it's a team-friendly deal (with a side of kicking the can down the road courtesy of five void years).
The three-year deal includes $39 million in base pay, according to OverTheCap.com. Hufanga received a $7.5 million signing bonus that will be prorated as $1.5 million salary cap hits over the next five years (including void years at the end of the deal).
OTC's website says Hufanga has $20 million guaranteed over the next two years, a $14.74 million option bonus in 2027 and up to $3 million through per-game roster bonuses from 2025-2027.
This season, Hufanga has a low base salary of just $1.5 million, giving him a very team-friendly 2025 salary cap hit of $3,411,765, according to OTC. He'll have a base salary of $11 million and a cap hit of $13.5 million in 2026.
In 2027, Hufanga's base salary will be $1.26 million with a cap hit of $6.7 million (the $14.74 million option that year will be prorated as $2.948 million cap hits from 2027-2031).
The deal gives the Broncos plenty of cap flexibility in 2025, but the void years and prorated signing and option bonuses will leave behind a $14,792,000 cap hit in 2028 after Hufanga's contract has ended, per OTC.
OTC estimates Denver is now left with about $17,725,270 in remaining salary cap space. If the team's draft class takes up $4.215 million worth of top 51 cap space as Spotrac.com estimates, the Broncos have about $13,510,057 in remaining cap space. That's more than we expected, but the club likes to have about $10 million free going into the fall to allow for in-season signings and injured players who still count against the cap.
So Denver could still make a few moves (especially if they make any cuts or restructures), but the team's big free agent splashes are likely over until 2026.
