They don't have any other wide receivers to pay, so Tavon gets ALL the money :)

Good for them - as long as they keep paying their mediocre players top money, the likes of Donald and Gurley will be asking for even more money when they are due... I think we are in the middle of the pack with LA when it comes to salary cap space next year. Should be interesting

As a side note, went through sporttrac and saw that DJ will be only getting paid $800k next year as part of his rookie scale. WOW!

You may think it is funny now..... But just imagine what Michael Floyd will be asking for.

The money struck me as crazy as well -- but if you are the Rams:

1. You are paying on projection. It seemed like how they used him and his maturity came together last year. They are clearly counting on further progression.

2. I think also this was motivated by the thought of Austin going to a more settled offense in free agency and blowing up.

3. As a mediocre team wanting to be better, you can't create holes as fast as you fill them -- even overpaying, they needed to keep young talent.

There will be a honeymoon in LA with the Rams for a year or two, but I predict the novelty will quickly wear off. Playing in the Coliseum won't help matters either.

But what happens once Stan's $2b+ palace opens in Inglewood in a few years? Prices for everything will necessarily skyrocket - will there be enough fans with enough cash to afford it to fill the stadium? I'm thinking NO. If they could put a contending team on the field, maybe, but these 7-9, 8-8 teams aren't going to cut it at top dollar. Not in LA with a million other things to do on a weekend. Will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

Man, I would have loved to see what BA could do with Tavon Austin.

This is why I will be shocked if the Cards re-sign Floyd.

I wonder if what ultimately happens with Smokey will come into play. I hate to think he's done but concussions are no longer taken lightly.

Edit: I realize their skill sets are completely different but while the Cards seem to be very good at drafting WR both of them would be hard to replace in one off season. imo

IMO one will not readily affect the other too greatly. They have different roles, and the concussion concerns will come into play in JB's negotiations.
one thing which is certain....we need to keep top notch pass catchers as they will need to bail out Palmers replacement early and often I am guessing.... having one guy who can catch anything and another who can catch up to anything is a huge benefit for a young QB.

We have a Tavon Austin, his name is JJ Nelson. I don't see much difference between the two. Fast and small.

Austin is more of an all-purpose skill player: WR, slot, RB, KR, PR. Nelson is strictly a WR. But, if you are talking about WR alone, you are 100% correct. It's incredible that no one of the Rams has figured out how to use him.

Pretty much it Mitch, although you made me think why doesn't Arians use Nelson on some end around plays because he has speed and he has some elusiveness. Seems to me it would be worth looking at.

jj nelson is very underrated
he is a faster and a healthy version of john brown
maybe not so sharp on his routes

arians is old school coach
end around plays are not part of his playbook
even not using the tigh end much as receiver is questionable
gresham and momah could be used more as big targets
