What is the deal here ?

The guy is a four year starter with Michigan, nasty attitude, athletic, and was highly graded last year, and dropped a bit this year.

There is a good chance he could be there at #20.

So why not ?

6'7" about 310 lbs, good feet

I just don't see the concern about him, and if we are looking for that athletic left tackle that is seemingly thriving in the NFL these days, then there you go.

Give me you thoughts, cause that is what I am looking for.

He's not athletic and does not have good feet. He's big, strong, and was a 4 year starter for Michigan but that's about it. Whenever he faced a D lineman with ability, he struggled. There just weren't too many he faced playing in the Big 10. Watch the 2013 opener against Bama, the game against Clowney, or the 2013 regular season finale against OSU and you'll see a guy who gets exposed by athletic DE's.

He's not nearly in the same class Jake Long or Joe Thomas. Heck, Levi Brown was a much better prospect coming into the NFL than Lewan.

Lewan will play a long time in the NFL. I just doubt that it's at LT. The guys I'd compare him to are Gabe Carimi and Riley Reiff. Those are the type of guys that you could play at LT if you have to but are better suited for RT.

I can't imagine he lasts until 20. I like him more than Martin. I'd take him if he was there, but with so many needy teams and so few tackles, he goes.

Put the tape on as they say. He just does not dominate like a top tackle should. As Cbus stated.. he struggles against top talent. He is not a top tackle, but will probably be drafted that way. Perhaps he can develop more consistency in the NFL, but he is not ready.

with the proviso that depending on who else is there:

I would have no issue with Lewan at #20.

I think he can play LT (that comes with a money back guarantee!!), but his downside is a really good RT.

at #5 ( Levi) that hurts to take what you think is a premier LT, and instead get a steady RT. Not at #20. I get the team can bring back Winston, has Massie, etc --- but drafts are a next 5-8 years kind of deals, not just next year.

I saw a couple of his games he did not impress me with his ability at LT. If we pursue a LT in FA then if he is avaiable at #20 I have no problem picking him then for the RT position.

I watched a lot of Lewan last year, thinking he was going to come out and didn't like him at all. He is big but not athletic and if I remember correctly, he lunges. He gets beat easily by speed rushers...sound familiar?

If we have learned anything, you don't reach in the 1st round. We have tried to fill the need through the draft, it's time to just sign a proven LT (one of the most important positions in the game) and take the BPA.

He's good, not great. I think he'll be a solid starter, but never pro bowl level.

I'd be extremely disappointed if we don't fill the LT spot in free agency and put ourselves I a position where we have to cross our fingers and hope lewan falls to 20

He is 2nd round talent IMNSHO.

I think he has character issues

Isn't he the player who purportedly threatened a female student at U of M who accused one of his teammates of sexual assault? I think he also disappeared in big games. I would not waste a first round pick on him.

2013 BIG TEN RIMINGTON-PACE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE YEAR: Taylor Lewan, Michigan...Lewan, who has opened 47 career games at left tackle -- including 40 consecutive -- is only the ninth Michigan offensive lineman to be a starter for four seasons for the Maize and Blue. A semifinalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award, the Wolverines' offensive captain did not allow a sack during the 2013 regular season on his way to being recognized as the Big Ten's top offensive lineman.

I think he will go before we choose, if not I would be happy with the pick.

I like Massey at RT. It's the left side that must come rom FA or draft. It has to be someone who can come in and play from day 1. Massey with Potter would be very solid IMO.''''

There are going to be a lot of tackles available in the 1st Rd. He or Cameron Erving last until 20. Richardson from Baylor wouldn't be a bad consolation prize either, especially if your doing battle with Seattle, SF and StL 6 times a year.

Also would be happy with Lewan.I think he will be a very solid Pro .Asw for being dominated by Clowney was that where Clowney (I don`t feel like playing today) got any of his monster total of 3 sacks in 2013?

He got exposed cause Michigan threw more than ever this year. Previously blocking for a running QB like Dennard Robinson will hide some flaws in pass- protection.

Cyril Richardson is a guard.

Bottom line, the guys 'OK'

You need to hit on your 1st round pick, no matter where you are picking. Instead of the 5th best LT, we could have the #1 G, or #2 CB, or #1 SS, etc.

I dont want an 'OK' LT. We can go get a Darn good one in Albert or somewhere else.

Lewan is sloppy. Not great in pass protection. Makes dumb mental errors.
