Tight end Rob Housler and wide receiver Lestar Jean worked out for pro scouts on a windy Thursday in Boca Raton. Housler, NFLDraftScout.com's No. 5 tight end, didn't work out on Thursday. He is a name many will recognize because he posted a 4.46-second 40-yard dash -- and 37-inch vertical -- at the NFL Scouting Combine last week. Just as important to pro scouts was the fact that the projected third-round pick weighed in at 248 pounds at the Combine; significant considering arrived at FAU as a 218-pound receiver. Housler's game is his athleticism but he has an impressive 80-inch wingspan and did 22 reps of 225 pounds, showing potential to develop as an inline blocker. Twelve teams attended the workout, including the Dolphins, Colts, Packers, Bills, Jaguars, Saints, Giants, Raiders, Eagles, Titans and Buccaneers. - NFLDraftScout.com

I was doing some research on this guy last night, seeing as I've never heard of him before. While he is never going to be a devastating run or pass blocker, he appears to be a match up nightmare against linebackers in coverage with his speed, long arms, and ability to find seams in the zone.

Im not as disappointed in the pick now as I was yesterday

Go do that. Because other than this I have yet to see where he is ranked in the top 150 prospects. I hope it works out. My problem is this, how many TEs did Whis bring here? How often are they utilized in his offense? Maybe if this team actually used a tight end and maybe if they didnt burn through so many TEs under the Whisenhunt era this pick would make more sense. The fact that Oline, QB, and LB continue to be the biggest need and was not addressed is crazy. Anyone expecting miracles when FA opens up is dreaming. You already know their plans for QB and since when has this organization been aggressive and proactive in FA?

Let's name ALL of the TE's Whiz has burned through:

Spach - street FA midseason due to injury.
Patrick - drafted in rd7
Dray - drafted in rd7
Pope - draft bust #? from DG. Plays for the chiefs now and is on one dudes fantasy fb team (he finished last).
Becht - FA pickup who was here for the last 2 years of his career.

Who am I missing?

Finally we invest in a TE prospect with oustanding size/speed ratio and now we hate the pick?

Mike Mayock had him rated as the 97th player overall.

With this guy and Dray, we finally have to fine young TE's. However, with all of our other needs, like offensive line, this wasn't a real need but I'm not the one making the decisions.

If fan draft happiness is produced by drafting a position of need at the right ranking, then I guess tha Cards hit both extremes of unhappiness.

They drafted a player ranked at the right spot, but not a position of need in the 2nd, and then drafted a position of need, but not ranked in the right spot in the 3rd.

I don't mind taking this kid--he had been listed as a sleeper steal in the lead-up to the draft--but I think us taking him in the 3rd was just too high.

This is exactly the point. Well put, Stout.

Right or wrong, if the coaching staff gets the players they want, what does it matter to them at what position they are drafted?

I just don't see it that way. There were enough sources rating this guy high so as to indicate we would have lost him if we didn't take him in the 3rd. I think this is a good pick IF we finally start using our TE (based on other people's opinion - I've never seen him play). If we continue ignoring that position this pick becomes one of the all time stupid draft day decisions. Especially when you consider how great our needs are elsewhere.
