TECUMSEH — Wherever the Tecumseh boys lacrosse team goes, No. 13 is going to be right there with them.
The No. 13 jersey is displayed on the bench and on a helmet decal along with the No. 6 inside of green and purple ribbon.
The No. 13 belongs to senior Jude Broussard, as did the No. 6 when he was freshman, and it always will.
"He means everything to this program," coach Bogie Trout said. "We're playing this year and from here on out for him. He meant so much to all of us. Carrying on his memory and keeping him with us."
Broussard tragically died in September and Tecumseh lacrosse is making sure he'll never be forgotten. Broussard is still playing a major role with the team.
"We're not afraid to bring him up," Trout said. "I love that about this team. We're doing mental Mondays now where the first 15 minutes of practice we get everyone in little pods and just talk. Chatting about whatever is going on their life to let these kids know it's OK to talk about things. The male stigma is hard to break down, but we're trying to open these guys up and let them know it's OK to share and show emotions.
"As long as I'm the head coach, nobody is wearing No. 13."
While Broussard's memory is leading Tecumseh off the field, there are plenty of leaders on the field as well.
Senior Cooper Barkway and junior Luke Dunham are off to great starts to the season scoring, while senior Jacob Smalls is leading on the defensive side.
"We're hanging heavily on our two captains, Cooper Barkway and Jacob Smalls," Trout said. "They earned it, they lead on and off the field. Leaning on our goalie (junior) Soren (Berthelsen). On the offensive side it's (senior) Wyatt (Salenbien), (senior Braden) Conn, (junior) Luke (Dunham), the older guys who have been in the system now for three or four years."
While Tecumseh is a veteran led team, there is some youthful influence as well bringing depth to the roster.
"(Sophomore) Tyler Havelka and Jonathan VanZandt have really stepped up at the beginning of the season," Trout said. "We're hurt a little bit on offense to start the year with an injury, but we're asking them to step up and they have been."
The Tecumseh boys lacrosse team has a longstanding tradition of being one of, if not the top team in the SEC White.
The program has 12 league titles, including sharing the title the previous two seasons with Dexter. With many returners to the field, Tecumseh is looking to three-peat despite the growth of the league in recent years.
"Lincoln has been getting better every year, same with Pinckney," Trout said. "There's really no teams we can overlook. Every game is going to be a dogfight."
Tecumseh isn't looking to end with just an SEC White title. There are bigger prizes to be won, like the program's first regional since 2018.
"The expectations haven't changed," Trout said. "Win the region and go further than any Tecumseh lacrosse team has gone since the 2002 state championship team. We have the talent, we have the players and hopefully just find our groove."
