Ravens LB Terrell Suggs is expected to undergo surgery on his torn Achilles next week. He is likely out for the 2012 season.

From former Redskins G.M. Vinny Cerrato, now of 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore, comes the latest stunner in one of the most stunning offseasons in NFL history.

Per Cerrato, Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs has torn an Achilles tendon.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that the Ravens have not yet received a conclusive diagnosis. Still, for now, it doesn’t look good.

And it won’t look good for the Ravens if they have to proceed without the 2011 defensive player of the year.

It’s also a stark reminder that, no matter how good a team looks on paper, it can all fall apart, quickly.

Making matters worse for the Ravens is the timing. If this had happened a week ago, they could have adjusted their draft plans accordingly.

Aaron Wilson of the Carroll County Times reports Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs tore his Achilles working out in Arizona and will need surgery, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation

Terrell Suggs won't be able to play this season, per the source. Surgery for Suggs is pending.

Basketball & football just don't mix.

The Ravens are a snakebitten team, that seems to always have something go wrong in their attempt to win a Super Bowl lately.

I wish the Cardinals were that "jinxed" that we made the playoffs almost every season for the last 2 decades.

The Cards sure dodged a bullet here. If they had listened to the idiot fans they would have been stuck with this guy.

Suggs told me reports he'll be out all season will "make it so much sweeter when I run out of that tunnel and prove everyone wrong."

I think Suggs is overly optimistic.
As @Stephania_ESPN reports, average return from torn Achilles to play in NFL has been around 11 months based on 2006 study. Could be sooner.

Not only is he done for 2012, Many don't recover and get back to normal after the injury. Add to the fact that in football years he isn't young anymore. Shame.

I think he'll be okay next year.

Hell, I'm almost 40 and made my lacrosse league's all-star team this year after blowing out my knee and achilles a couple of years ago. If I can do it... ;)

Oh it can be done. But there are others who have done it and just not com back the same. The one that comes to mind off the top of my head is the pass rusher from the Bengals who's name escapes me. Hmmmm???

And besides you are just a special kind of athlete! :D

For a position where .1 seconds over the length of 40 yards can drop you several rounds in the draft, ANY loss of explosion & speed can kill your effectiveness. Hope he makes it back (he should have been a Cardinal, too!)....

Not to nitpick but the Ravens haven't been around for 2 decades but your point is well taken. Since 1999, the Ravens have had only 3 losing seasons and 1 .500 season and have missed the playoffs only 5 times. They even won a Super Bowl and did so as only the 2nd team to not allow any offensive points in a Super Bowl.

Suggs LOVES playing basketball. During the off-season, if you went around to some LA Fitness gym's in tempe, you would have a very good chance of finding Suggs playing some basketball with his buddies. Crappy news, but reports say it's only a partial tear, so technically it should be stronger than it was before with proper rehab.

If I am a GM, I am adding basketball to the list of non-allowable activities into every contract from here-on-out.

Why not just put all of your players into a medically induced coma during the offseason?

Playing basketball in the offseason I would think would be considered a good thing. It's not inherently dangerous like motorcross or anything. It's physical activity.

Sure... might not be comparable in terms of risk of serious harm, however, basketball is incredibly harmful on knees and ankles... body parts that are required elements in order to play football. ;)

I'd take my players doing what Suggs does in the offseason over what Lutui does in the offseason anyday
