With the money we save losing Q and Edge, why dont we go and get Suggs and Ray Lewis? Then we can move Dansby outside and have the best LB corps in the game.

The only OLB's under contract next year is Laboy and Okeafer(2009 is his last year).

So in that regard there will be room for Suggs. Not sure if the Cards want to go the big top tier free agent money route or the quantity mid teir free agent route.

There will have to be some tough decisions to make during the 2009 offseason that is for sure. See the 2009 UFA list below (didnt included the RFA's or the EFA's)

Replaceable or Cheap re-signs:
St. Pierre
T. Smith
E. Brown
Beisel
R. Brown
Celestin
Dirk Johnson

Must Re-Signs:
Warner
Dansby

Would like to Re-sign if the price is right:
Arrington
Berry
Haggans

Would like to Re-sign if the price is right but have already been replaced by current 2008 draft class rookies:
A. Smith
Green

Guys who want new deals. In order of whom I think is more important to get done based on years left on their deal and other factors

1. Wilson - the only person with any real grip when talking about getting an extension because he is the only one who has only 1 year left on his deal.
2. Boldin
3. Dockett

Good Stuff

I'd be cool with trading Boldin and signing Dansby, Wilson, Dockett and Suggs.

Legit? Or Negotiating Ploy?

My gut says: "Ploy."

Somewhere within the bowels of the Rod Graves Guide to Roster Structuring and Personnel Matters has to be a pretty detailed set of guidelines and procedures which, if any good, he'd remain faithful to regardless of the PR hype.

My guess is that there's a way Rod, Michael and the coaches view every depth chart position ranking and 53 man roster ranking with regard to each player's (a) talent, (b) fit within the system in relation to other players, (c) "ceiling" and "floor", (d) shelf life, (e) current cap value and (f) next contract cap value.

The only time you throw the Guide out the window is when a player has special importance to the franchise - like a Q or an A-Dub or someone we might not even be aware of (but the brass really appreciates).

With someone like Suggs or anyone else from the outside, I'd imagine Rod and Wiz would dispassionately apply the Guidebook in the same way they'd look at our current players - and establish (1) how much they want him and (2) the most they'd be willing to pay for him.

Right now - LaBoy's groin notwithstanding - we're pretty deep in Predator LB/DE's and not desperate for someone like Suggs. So it would all boil down to (1) what kind of value would he add to our team and (2) what, if anything, would we be willing to pay for him.

Unless there's stuff going on we don't know about, I can't see us signing him.

I'm not saying we'd definitely go after Suggs hard--it could well be that his price tag doesn't fit with the FO strategy--but you can never have too many LBs in the defense we're running today. I'd bet dollars to donuts that Penderghast would find a way to use all those backers (plus, Berry and Okeafor aren't getting any younger).

Thats this season, not next season. Since we are talking about signing him as a free agent we have to talk about things in terms of the 2009 season, of which we are not pretty deep in LB's/DE's. Right now we have two starters Laboy and Okeafer under contract for the 2009 season. Not a single backup. Not to mention Okeafers hold on his current status is questionalbe considering his salary and age.

Because I'm not certain that we will keep Dansby. Dockett is way down the line for getting a new contract. He doesn't need to be resigned this (off)season.

Getting Suggs is a pipedream for many fans here after we passed on him in the draft.

I think it would be a dream situation all around if Graves could make all of this happen. I don't think he can do anymore than one or maybe in a best case scenerio 2 of those 5 things you listed.
