Gotta like that Salim and Damon are such influential mentors in his life. If Lute was still coaching it would be a shoo-in.

So my question to people close to the program: Has Miller made it a priority to connect with our NBA Alums? That was such a big part of what made AZ good in the first place.

I hope that Miller is working this angle, Salim and Damon were stars at UA and are in the NBA. I wonder how his relationship is with the alumni, I know that former players have strong ties to the program but they could sell Lute Olson because they played for him, its hard to sell a coach you haven't played for.

Another interesting note on Jones, he wants to commit sometime in November, but has not scheduled any visits. He is considering 7 schools but will not visit all of them, I guess his in-home visits are what he is going to base his decision on.

This link states KU may be out, not sure of the source, but Jones' mother denied the rumor and said Terrence is still interested in the school.

Miller had a meet and greet with many alums the night before the Lute tribute in August. It went very well supposedly and calmed many nerves as that contigency of alums were pushing Pastner pretty hard for the coaching gig.

I'll throw out an off the cuff prediction. If Jones goes to the Pac 10 it'll be UA, if he doesn't, don't be surprised if he ends up at Oklahoma, and don't be surprised if Josh Smith joins him.

Smith was supposed to be visiting UCLA this weekend, during the week he told Dave Telep of Scout he didn't have any basketball visits scheduled yet. All week UCLA's scout site, the LA Times, Seattle papers etc repeated Smith is visiting UCLA today.

According to people on BRO he was NOT at UCLA today, they had Lamb, Ziegler and McCallum but no Josh Smith. Nobody is sure yet what it means but there's a lot of speculation earlier today that if Smith didn't visit UCLA it might mean a big change in his recruitment has happened.

I know he and Jones are friends, I'm pretty sure OU is the only school left that's still in it for both kids other than UCLA, and I personally think Smith isn't going to end up at UCLA and I've never believed Jones would. FYI Jones' mother apparently denied that he's dropped Kansas.

Man it must suck for coaches to have so much of their career success tied into the decisions of 16-17 year old kids.

I did find it weird that Smith's profile on Scout did not have a UCLA visit scheduled. I honestly think Jones ends up at OU, the Smith thing I don't know. Right now I think Payne is more of a realistic possibility for UA but he has Kansas and Kentucky visits after his UA visit next week which is a little concerning. I am wondering what is the deal with Kirk, he hasn't scheduled any more visits and doesn't have an announcement date. I hope Miller is not holding up on him waiting for Jones & Payne to decide. November is going to be full of commitments so the recruiting dust should be settled by the end of the month.

I've been told 2 things completely opposite on Smith so I have no clue what's going on with him.

UA obviously has an in with Jones with his cousins being Salim and Damon. I think OU's chances are based on 2 things, Blake Griffin being the #1 overall pick, and the fact that OU is a finalist for Smith as well.

I would guess Jones is going to end up at UA but if he doesn't I wouldn't be surprised if he and Smith wind up at Oklahoma.

FYI the claim now is that Josh Smith is in fact on his visit to UCLA, he just didn't play at the pickup game with the other 3 recruits and that started the rumor he wasn't visiting UCLA.

weird story all along. If Smith picks UCLA I bet Jones goes to UA.

I believe Scout doesn't update their info often. Alex Kirk's profile doesn't show his visit last week.

No it was beyond that. The guys at BRO and Bruinzone who are supposed to be the insiders in this stuff(not Tracy and Greg though) were reporting that Smith didn't make the visit and nobody knew why yet. Tracy asked people to be patient and then later in the evening put up a story that said in fact Smith was at UCLA, he just didn't play in the pickup game.

From my understanding KU is far from out of the Terrance Jones contest.

Not from what his mother said, but she said he still had some interest, one could read into that as he may have lost some interest from her statement.

Yeah I read that they were out and then later read that his mom said that report wasn't true and Kansas wasn't out. Or am I remembering wrong?

This is correct, some erroneous report claiming we were cut. I don't understand what overseascardfan was saying in the earlier post.

TJ's mom left us off of a list of schools TJ was still considering, therefore it was reported we were cut. This was a mistake that was cleared up by TJ himself through texts. TJ had a very good in house with Self and was very excited about KU per his words as recently as Sept 29th.

TJ will not have an official visit to KU and from my understanding this is because KU doesn't have one to give. (Schools are allotted a certain amount of official visits per year).

Sounds like it's between Kansas and the Pac-10 schools.

Would be a huge commitment for whoever lands him. Many people says he might be underrated despite being ranked top 15 everywhere due to the fact that he blew up in the last year.

Well, according to zagsblog, it seems the relationship between TJ and KU has soured of sorts. TJ's mom seems like a female Carl Henry in all of this. If KU isn't getting back to them then we've either given up on him or are deciding we can't win him over with the usual methods. Might very well be UofA's to lose here.

http://www.zagsblog.com/2009/10/05/terrence-jones-sets-visits/#more-22922

The mother of five-star power forward Terrence Jones says she has tentatively set up a run of official and unofficial vists for her son.

Jones, a 6-8 forward out of Portland (Ore.) Jefferson, has the following visits on tap:

Oct. 9 – Oklahoma

Oct. 16 – Washington

Oct. 23 – Arizona

Oct. 28 – Kentucky for Blue/White Game

Oct. 31 – Oregon (unofficial)

Nov. 6 – UCLA

Linda Mashia-Jones, Terrence’s mother and a former scholarship player at Washington, says Kansas may get an unofficial but she has not heard back from the staff.

“I have not heard from them,” she said. “He wants Arizona over Kansas [for an official visit]. You only get five, unless it’s going to be an unofficial.”

Linda said her son is playing his cards close to the vest — even with her – but he wants to commit in the fall.

“He would like to make a decision on the first go-round so this will be over,” she said. ”I think it would be a lot easier and a lot less stressful on him. He’s looking forward to relaxing and enjoying his senior year.

“If he waits until April, I just think it will just get worse. It will make the decision harder and more drawn out.”

She also said that a recent article indicating Jones is cousins with former NBA guard and current Memphis Grizzlies assistant Damon Stoudamire is not completely accurate because they aren’t blood relatives.

“They are cousins by marriage,” she said. “Terrence and Damon and Salim [Stoudamire], they do consider themselves cousins. It’s really not a blood thing.”

Like she says - TJ is playing everything very close to the vest. I don;t think anyone has a clue what he's going to do. Almost everyone on his list has been rumored to be a favorite at one point or another. Miller also has Doron Lamb lined up for a visit that same weekend according to Zagoria but I'm not sure he'd get dropped if Bejerano commits this week. He's probably OU or KU's to lose from all reports.

KU and UofA have so many recruiting battles right now. We've got Lamb coming to Late Night on the 16th. Adreian Payne has both schools on his list, and both Josiah Turner for 2011 and Shabazz Muhammad for 2012.

I still think he goes to Oklahoma but he still has UCLA, UK, Oregon and UW on his list as well as Oklahoma.

His choice is interesting, UK is the best fit for how he plays now, he's a 4 that loves to handle the ball like Lamar Odom, the UK offense will let him do that. People keep saying he should go to a school that will improve his defense and post skills but I completely disagree, he's an NBA 3 so there's no point going somewhere like UCLA where he probably plays the 4.

If I were advising him I'd say go to UK or OU, because I think both schools will let him play more like a 3. Oregon will promise him that but then play him at the 4, as would UW based on the roster.

Well of course my hope is that KU told him he didn't have a spot anymore because we got Harrison Barnes. I really really hope.
