Watching Dallas on MNF they kept talking about this and it got me wondering. Most seem to think by next year Henson will be the starter, and that he's going to start soon. I kind of doubt it.
The interesting thing is while every excuse Parcells is giving makes sense, Vinny is playing well, don't want to give up, Henson isn't ready, you can't help but wonder if there is a money incentive too? Henson signed an 8 year contract with a 3.5 million bonus. The contract voids to 4 years if Henson plays in 15% of the offensive plays THIS season. If he does, he gets 3.5 million bonus at the end of NEXT Season, if he doesn't deal stays at 8 years and the bonus is paid out over the 8 seasons. So obviously Henson stands to get a substantial advantage financially by playing in 15% of the plays this year, which is essentially 2.5 games. Do that deal voids to 4 years, gets a bonus after next year, he's good to go.
I'd be pretty surprised if Drew starts before week 15.
I'd go off on Green now for not parting with a 2005 3rd round pick to get Henson but from what I've read Henson told Houston he wanted to play for Dallas, he handpicked them based on a list he made on opening at QB, talent at WR, coach, and caliber of team. You can certainly see that when he signed, with their defense they appeared to be a better team than us, now that's arguable and we have the opportunity and the coach, but at the time it happened, we had the worst defense in football. I still think Graves should have picked him 2 years ago but Houston wasn't the only team planning to do that, just the ones that actually did it, no guarantee we'd have gotten him, and of course if we'd picked Henson, we wouldn't have Reggie Wells!
Going to be interesting, I read where Testaverde said Henson has one of the 5 best arms he's seen in his entire NFL career, but the Cowboys are still working to get rid of his habit of dropping three quarters or sidearm from his baseball days because he'll get passes batted down and balls will sail high on him as a result. Testaverde said in his youth he had a pretty good arm himself but "I could never throw the ball the way this guy does."
