NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported a trade between the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns just hours before the start of the 2025 NFL Draft, involving late-round picks. The Texans sent their fifth-round pick (No. 166) and a 2027 fifth-rounder to Cleveland, acquiring three picks in return: two sixth-rounders (No. 179 and No. 216) and a seventh-rounder (No. 255). The deal, though minor, appears to be part of both teams' roster build into the future.
For Houston, the trade is commonplace with general manager Nick Caserio’s philosophy of maximizing draft capital. The Texans, building around quarterback C.J. Stroud, have found gems like Dameon Pierce in later rounds, and these extra picks offer chances to add depth at positions like offensive line or secondary. The move preserves flexibility, with the 2027 pick a future asset unlikely to impact immediate plans.
Cleveland, coming off a 3-14 season, could be using the tactic to package picks together for higher-value selections. The fifth-rounder gives the Browns a shot at a rotational player to address needs at linebacker or offensive line, adding in general manager Andrew Berry’s roster overhaul efforts post-Deshaun Watson trade.
In a pre-draft season that trades have been non-existent, we might be seeing the first of many in the next few hours as the NFL Draft is about to kick off.
