The Texas Tech women's track and field team's chances for a high finish at the NCAA indoor championships more or less vanished on Friday in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
Shelby Frank, on the other hand, kept doing what she does. The senior from North Dakota achieved first-team all-America status in the weight throw for the third year in a row, finishing in fifth place. Her best mark was 75 feet, 2 inches.
Frank was runner-up in the weight throw at the NCAA indoor each of the past two years at Minnesota before she transferred to Tech.

Friday was day one of the two-day competition at the Virginia Beach Sports Center. It was an OK day for the Tech men, but much less so for the Tech women, outside of Frank's performance. Naomi Krebs, ranked No. 5 in Division I in the 60-meter hurdles based on her season-best time, was disqualified for a false start. Success Umukoro and Brianna Howard, each ranked No. 7 in their events, failed to advance to Saturday's final.
Umukoro ran 7.27 seconds in the 60 meters for sixth in her heat and 10th overall. Howard ran 23.36 in the 200 meters for third in her heat but 14th overall.
Umukoro, Howard and Fanny Arendt earned second-team all-America status. Arendt got 12th in the 800 meters, running 2:02.57.
On Saturday, the Tech women have two athletes in the high jump, including fourth-ranked Temitope Adeshina, and two in the long jump.
On the men's side, Malachi Snow advanced to Saturday's final in the 60 meters, then shortly thereafter Snow and Antoine Andrews advanced in the 60-meter hurdles. Snow ran 6.54 in 60, the fourth-fastest qualifying time. Snow and Andrews went 7.54 and 7.59, respectively, third and sixth in the 60 hurdles.
Shaemar Uter also qualified for the final in the 400 meters, going 46.35. The junior from Jamaica went into Friday ranked No. 17 in Division I, having run only two meets this season, but now he's in position to be a first-team all-American for the second year in a row after finishing sixth last year.
The letdown for the Red Raiders came in the pole vault, where Sean Gribble failed to clear the opening height of 17-7.
In addition to the Tech men who advanced on Friday, the Red Raiders have three more competing Saturday in field events, plus their 1,600-meter relay.
