I think solo drivers in car pool lanes should get fined based on how many cars they hold up in morning rush hour when they get pulled over. Say, $50 per gawker.

Perhaps $1000 per mile spent in the HOV lane would help as well.

I carpool quite regularly now with my girlfriend, most of the cars I come across in the carpool lane, are cheating.

That said, I think there should be a fine for those who have multiple people in the car yet DON'T drive in the carpool lane. If you're going to force social engineering down my throat, at least use the damn lanes.

I also think compact cars should be required to park in compact spaces. One of the trends in California now is local legislation to ticket SUV's who park in compact spaces, I understand this, but as an SUV driver I can explain why, because the larger spaces are ALWAYS filled with small cars who should be parking in the compact spaces.

My biggest driving problem is red light running, I can't understand why the fine for that isn't MUCH higher, carpool cheaters suck but they're not usually putting my life in jeopardy by doing it, red light runners are.

Wonder what Randy Moss feels about such issues?

Awesome. I completely agree about the compact spaces.
The carpoolers in the regular flow of traffic? I dunno. Sometimes if you only have to go a few miles it's not feasible.

I'd like to see vehicle registration fees based solely upon the mpg of the vehicle and how many miles it's used for. In CA the fees are based solely on the value of the car, which makes no sense.
There's no reason for somebody driving a Civic to pay for the same amount of externalities as somebody driving a Hummer.

excellent post redrob.

i think it's kinda funny that cheesy and i have become the voices of optimism on this board now . . .

i think we're going to have to re-take muster and labelling as darksiders are becoming koolaiders and vice versa.

yeah... that's worthwhile to police a freeking parking for carsize. are you serious about thinking tax dollars should go towards a worthless and meaningless task as getting a 'fair parking spot'?? that's completely rediculous. first come, first serve. unless you've got a physical handicap, get in the back of the line buddy.

I think that's more of an "ideal situation" hypothetical-type thing. I don't really think it should be policed, obviously.
Unless of course I have to park really, really far away. Then heads should roll.

You know how the entrance to the freeway sometimes starts out as two lanes, then narrows down to one as you enter the freeway? It used to be take turns, left then right lane, and so on.

Now with the popularity of NASCAR on TV, people are actually adopting NASCAR rules for driving on public roads. We have people driving right on the rear bumper of the car in front of them, and if the nose of their car is in front of your car, they'll run you off the road holding their position, thinking this is how it's done.

And my comment was predicated on the local ordinances(Palo Alto for one) that now ticket drivers who park non compact cars in compact spaces. My comment was simple, if you're going to do that, then you ought to be ticketing compact drivers who park in non compact spaces. If there is no ordinance against parking in a compact space, of course you don't then police the non compact spaces either.

As for the costs involved, this may come as a surprise, but the reason Palo Alto does it is they get a pretty good chunk of change from traffic tickets. Palo Alto has some unique situations that result in a lot of people pushing the envelope (parking meters, iffy legalities) and they learned long ago that you can make MORE than enough money off the tickets to pay for the people handing them out.

The one thing I do like about Palo Alto is their stance on DUI's. They have a police station across the street from several public parking garages near all the downtown clubs. Everynight someone stumbles out of the bar, jumps in their car, starts it and as they get out of the exit from the garage, they get pulled over for a DUI. Sounds like entrapment but I know several people who've been caught and NONE of them would ever make the mistake of driving after drinking again. I think you have to take extreme measures for some things.

It makes sense financially, but man, that is a serious waste of manpower re: the compact spaces. I guess they gotta do what they gotta do.

There of course is another reason behind it, the anti SUV movement, but the primary motivation seems to be to get more money from parking tickets.

Remember, it's California, a lot of things here make no sense.

This would be tangent #3 in this twisted maze of a thread. (btw jake sucks)

As for the beating up each other thing, I agree with RedRob. Let's see how the season develops before we rip each other's heads off.

As for SUVs vs. Compacts, the biggest problem I see is that SUV drivers don't know how to park their cars. My girlfriend drives a little suzuki and works in Chandler. Every day she has to re-adjust her mirrors because some idiot in an escalade or other way oversized vehicle bumped them. Every day.

Idiots!

I'm all for SUVs like Durangos, 4runners, Explorers, etc. They're nice trucks. Anything bigger than that is simply overdoing it, and it's usually an ass driving it. Especially Tahoes

I was literally trapped at my work for like 15 minutes one day.

When my wife crashed our truck I rented a full size F-150 with extended cab. Huge truck. Anyway, I get to work early so I pulled into a spot all alone, no vehicles were parked anywhere near me.

When I went to leave another full size truck parked next to me on the passengers side. right on the line that seperated our spots. Another one parked across the narrow aisle, but did not pull all the way into its parking spot, taking up 1/4 of the aisle.

I didn't have enough room to get out. I had to do like a 100 point turn to get out. "Forward, 1 centimeter, stop reverse the wheel, back 1 centimeter, stop reverse the wheel."

I turned that damn rental back the next day.

How did you know I drive a Tahoe ? I actually avoid parking in the small spaces for the reason King mentioned about being trapped in the space. Happened in Sacramento last weekend in a fullsize space. Some idiot in an Acura parked out of his spot so close to me I couldn't get in on the driver side, had to wiggle across the passenger side. I only have a Tahoe to pull my boat, I had a Cherokee sport but it was too light, on panic stops the weight of the boat and trailer(light boat about 1200 pounds with trailer) would literally push me forward.

FYI, on Jake, a Bronco fan I communicate with on the Freak board sent me a note about him, she is having Griese flashbacks, one great year, then shoulder surgery, then abysmal. Seems Jake had shoulder surgery this offseason on that shoulder he hurt scrambling against San diego. I don't recall reading it, but apparently the word in camp is that jake's arm was noticeably stronger last year than this due to a workout program and a bunch of mechanics changes Kubiak and Shanahan made, but this year they say his mechanics are reverting and they're not sure if it's the surgery, or just Jake getting lazy. So there could be a physical reason he's started so slow, first I'd heard of his surgery.

Hijacking the thread back

Great post, Rob. I seldom post but don't miss hardly a day here, at least during the season. The truth is that since 1998 when I moved here and got to see the team I grew up with in St. Louis actually win a playoff game, I've been suffering from Cardinal Kool-aid poisoning. It sure is rampant these days. We've had so much reason for optimism, and then we see injuries and an uneven performance and WHAM we're down like a pillow. I see threads about "Ram for Dinner" and sip some Kool-Aid and I'm thinking about how sweet that opening win will feel. It's no wonder my hopes are dashed.

But we do need patience (don't we say this EVERY year?) When's the last time we've had someone with Green's track record, and not just promise, leading our team. If I had these odds with my fantasy team I'd sweep the league. Real change is deep, painful, and risky. If he's right we'll all be crying for joy by the time the stadium opens, marvelling at seeing OUR TEAM mentioned in the national media with pride and not derision. If he's not, I'll still root for my team, drink my KoolAid, and think about how next year we'll turn the corner.

Hey, at least I can go see some football on Saturday night! GO CARDS!!!
