Yeah. How many times have I heard EVERYONE say we have NO depth at corner or olb. We need PLAYERS for those positions because were lacking in that area very badly. Our worst fear happened and its that our depth is playing and they suck in the secondary. Blame Billy Davis all you want but we need some solid talent man, plain and simple.

Agree, Einstein wasn't smart enough to put a defensive plan together to stop the Saints/Packers with the players we have.

We made it to the bowl last year with big plays, not a defensive juggernaut. We leaned on I'd rather be lucky than good too damn much.

Have to agree, we went one year too long with our old guys on the outside. Berry, Okeafor, and Haggens. They held up long enough to get us back to the postseason but they finally gave out the last game and a half.

Yeah this is a year for LOTS of defensive talent. Whiz knows it, Graves knows it, we all know it. We need a true DT, Corner depth BADLY, and young OLB's. What sucks is with OLB we not only need depth but starters.

I agree with all that and the fact we're minus a lot of players, I agree with all that but still Bill Davis needs to be fired.

We were relatively healthy against the Pack and we got smoked, a lot of teams smoke us including the 49ers.

See it's more about what he did with healthy players than right now that made up my mind on him, he shows ZERO creativity, more like a deer in the headllights.

He's in a bad spot but I saw nothing, NOTHING to show me he has any spunk or spark to eventually be premier, NOTHING.

Clancy at least could be creative.

We need much better, that's all I'll say.

So then I guess the question is who? It would have be a 3-4 guy as that is our personnel now. Romeo is gone...any ideas?

Do we really have 3-4 personel? We obviously would have a bunch of DT's and could use some DE's but Nine Oh & Campbell would be more then fine for LDE. Does Cody Brown or Davis have the quicks for the RDE position? If so we are almost set.

I'm with SKORP, not a fan of the 3-4 defense.

Never have been either.

The 3 4 is very weak against the pass happy teams in the NFL now.

You either have 4 run stopping pass rushing studs on the line or you're in a world of hurt against the most elite passing teams like us, the Colts and the Saints.

I always have thought the 4 3 was the best defense and still believe it is.

If we got a 4-3 coordinator we would have to keep Dansby because it is the perfect defense for him. I would keep Dockett inside and use Campbell at DE. Hagans is gone and we would need a pass rushing end, as well as a Sam linebacker. I think that it would reduce W Davis and C Brown to nickel d-end roles though.

Agree. It seems it would be easier to have a line of
DE-Campbell
DT-Dockett
DT-Branch
DE-Iwebema or Banks

Plus some draaftpicks or FAs.

I just can't disagree more that this was about coaching. This was lack of talent at key positions. This was about being so thin on the defensive end that if guys start going down with injury it leaves gaping holes. This team doesn't have the defensive talent to go back to the dance. We sure as hell don't have the depth we need.

Guess what? Brees and Rogers are not going away anytime soon. This team needs a better defensive line so that we don't have to depend on the blitz to put pressure on these guys which in turns leaves our sub par secondary on an island. We need more defensive talent IMO.

I don't know what more to say.

I'm giving you all the player problems you want and it can be a case of both you know.

It dosen't just have to be one or the other, it can be both and I think it is.

He's not terrible but he's not good either, he wasn't good with the 49ers, he's never been exceptional IMO, he just isn't.

Now of course he'd do better if we had more talent, everyone would but I don't think he'd be good enough even if we had a lot less holes.

Wow that's really off the wall. The Cards are so deep at DE that they let Antonio Smith go to Houston.

Dockett, Campbell, Branch and Iwebema. What in the world is wrong with that group?

I think he means OLB's. DL is the most well staffed group on the defense.

Yes. This defense improved dramatically from last season in many categories. A DC can only do so much when all of your EDGE pass rushers are old and worn down by years end. Your top pro Bowl CB is out for the game and your starting FS is out for the game. Your 2nd best DT cant perform at his highest level due to a cast immobilizing his hand etc etc etc... Not to mention sometimes the other team will just get the best of you. It happens.

Churning coordinators isn't the way you build a championship team.

Davis was a hero the first 3/4 of the season; he's earned another year, IMO--just as the defensive performance in the last couple of games has earned him a watchful eye.

Davis is the DC and he has to take the blame for the poor tackling and positioning of our defensive players. No excuse. I know we had injuries, but our tackling is so poor and/or non-existent that it's embarrassing. Even with little to no pressure there should not be receivers so wide open play after play. I am on the fence with this. I like the idea of bringing in an experienced DC and moving Davis to LB coach.

The responsibility, in fact, for poor tackling, etc. lies with the position coaches and the players, not the DC. His job, week in, week out, is not to supervise drills, but to be put together a D-plan for the upcoming opponent.

cosign.

At some point a professional NFL player should know how to tackle.
