That is a good point and a good observation. However, we need to be able to rely on at least our fourth starter, and DD hasn't been reliable all year. But, he's also had to deal with more important things than baseball, so I'm not angry at him at all.
I agree with you. During our World Series year, Schilling started Games 1-4-7 (each with three days rest), but Randy started 2 and 6 (with four days rest).
Webb and RJ's effectiveness would be reduced to non-Championship caliber if they started with only three days rest through the post-season.
I, too, appreciate what Doug Davis has gone through. But that doesn't condone his disappointing performances.
I am hoping that Melvin will follow through on the quote from management that, when Wally Scherzer comes back, it will be as a starter. As I've posted before, before he was removed from the rotation earlier this season, he had the third lowest ERA of the starters.
Then, demoted to on-call in the bullpen, a tired arm and sore shoulder.
Despite the time lost, I believe that Wally Scherzer can be a
good #4 starter behind Webb, Haren and Randy throughout the post-season.
Yes, I said Webb ahead of Haren, which is where he should be in the rotation. He's earned it. Especially if we don't want to see him walk when he can, now that Haren has been extended.
As usual, we could be a serious World Series threat in spite of Melvin's refusal to establish a status quo.
If Melvin sticks Scherzer back in the bullpen upon his return, all bets are off.
P.S.: 'Interesting that two days ago, Melvin said that Adam Dunn would be in the lineup every day at cleanup. Yesterday he said that he might platoon him with Upton when he returns (now that he's announced that he will keep Jackson in LF and Reynolds at 3B).
Here he goes again. I am very uncomfortable that the pitching rotation, bullpen and everyday lineup are in the hands of a man who evidently has Attention Deficit Disorder and is afraid to stick with a decision.
