Wasn't unexpected, but wasn't welcome either.

Fact is, after last season, every player gone is a bit of a gut punch. But the magic of the first season is over, and we have to be a real hockey team now. That means losing good players.

Except for Engelland and Fleury. Those guys stay forever.

Too bad, I liked Zac. Brought an edge and managed to keep it under control for the most part. He just got squeezed out. It's not fun playing against him.

Defenseman, with contract offer from Senators, can seek extension elsewhere
Erik Karlsson has permission from the Ottawa Senators to talk to other teams about a contract extension, Sportsnet confirmed Monday.

The 28-year-old defenseman has one season remaining on a seven-year contract and could become an unrestricted free agent after this season. The Senators offered Karlsson a contract extension Sunday but it is unknown if he wants to remain there.

If Karlsson reaches an understanding with another team, it and the Senators would have to work out an acceptable trade, Sportsnet said.

Isles add Filppula in Tavares aftermath
The New York Islanders added depth at the center position Monday by agreeing to terms on a one-year contract with veteran Valtteri Filppula.

The deal is reportedly worth $2.75 million and comes a day after star center John Tavares departed the organization to sign a seven-year deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs worth $11 million annually.

No news on the other Karlsson (Sens) front. Apparently TB was close but no cigar. Dallas and VGK remain in the running.

Man, what is his deal? One minute he's an unstoppable offensive force and the next (most of the time) he disappears. NY > AZ > Chicago > BJ's in record time. I had such high hopes for him.
