He is practice squad eligible which is something that is generally considered as a tie-breaker. Also, while I liked what I saw from him, I didn't see anything special. If a guy doesn't stand out as a depth player, he is generally replaceable.

If I'm not mistaken Kerwyn Williams was in the same situation. I haven't seen enough of Penny to be sure about anything but from what I have seen, he passes the eye test. My concern is another team is going to eventually snatch him up.

To further the draft aspect of this...if i was breaking down which positions seem like targets for the 3rd or 4th round on, I think it would be these positions. All of them have real opportunities for rookies to come in and win jobs, and the draft offers the depth needed to get players with the talent to do so.

1-TE
WHY...because this draft class is very deep, and you can argue that we have two openings and an injury prone guy. players like George Kittle and Michael Roberts in this draft class can come in a win a spot from Valles and Momah.

2-WR
WHY...because if Jeremy Ross, Brittain Golden, and Andre Ellington are your options, there are spots to win. Players like Stacy Coley, Noah Brown, Mack Hollins and Robert Davis could come in and beat these guys for a spot while also giving ST value.

3-RB
WHY...because it is a nice draft for role running backs, and we could use guys to do just that. From Kareem Hunt to Marlon Mack to Elijah Hood...there are plenty of options is various shapes and sizes.

4-CB
WHY...because this is a very deep draft class for CBs, and eventually other teams will start drafting other positions. Facts are that this team will likely lose Bethel after this year, and good value at premium positions is too hard to pass up. The Cards will go light at another position to carry a developmental CB with talent.

5-ILB
WHY...because Martin and Fua are nothing special, and while this class isn't special, I think there is a chance that the second group of players could drop to the 4th round due to depth at other positions. Elijah Lee out of Kansas St is a player who can make an NFL roster, but it is tough to see teams taking him over the TEs, CBs, Ss, DEs, WRs, and RBs available.

I think Kerwynn earned some consideration last year, but if the Cards take a 2nd or 3rd round RB, his spot will be in trouble as well. Personally, I think the Cards sign a FA RB to be the #2, and then draft a guy to compete with Williams and Penny.

All I can hope, Penny makes the best of his opportunity.
