Why is Vegas thinking they maybe getting the Coyotes? Or is that a meme?
Why is Vegas thinking they maybe getting the Coyotes? Or is that a meme?
With all the uncertainty hanging around the Gila River Arena lease next season, I would say that relocation to Vegas is a very real threat to NHL fans in the Phoenix area.
Glendale council has received three bids for management of the arena and the Coyotes refused to participate in the RFP process. If Coyote ownership isn't capturing the profits from managing and/or getting paid to manage, it has essentially destroyed the only business model that could sustain the hockey club with its regular operating losses.
There is no other good arena option that will be ready here next season, but there is a brand new one with a rich owner almost ready in Vegas. Hence the speculation.
If the Coyotes and Glendale don't make nice, like yesterday, I can't see how they stay. I hope I'm wrong.
Yeah, I think, or hope, the Suns would work out a deal with them so playing there wouldn't be such a financial burden. If that can happen the Yotes would be more than happy to stick it to Glendale after what has happened. They're coming downtown... They won't leave the valley. Mark it down! [emoji106]
Glendale selected facilities management company AEG Facilities to operate Gila River Arena, likely hastening the city's split with the Arizona Coyotes hockey team.
The city issued a formal notice of intent to reach a contract with AEG on Wednesday. The next steps for city administrators:
-Work out a contract with AEG executives to present to the City Council for approval.
-Determine if there's a way to retain the Coyotes in the building that was built for the NHL team.

There are no developments concerning a joint ASU-Coyotes hockey arena, said Mark Johnson, ASU senior director for media relations.
He noted a previous statement issued by ASU that stated: "We are exploring arena options and are encouraged that there are a number of good ones to pursue. We have been studying some of the options, but we aren't yet in a position to discuss specifics."
Phoenix and Tempe officials could not be reached for immediate comment.
GLENDALE, AZ - The Glendale City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether or not to approve an arena management contract with AEG to run the city-owned arena at the Westgate Entertainment District.

The Arizona Coyotes have been managing the arena, but did not bid on the request for proposal after council reneged on their contract. The team has made it known they are exploring other arena options, though the city would like them to stay.
“It would be our hope that they (Coyotes) come to an agreement with the new Arena manager to remain and play in the Arena,” Glendale spokesperson Jeanine L’Ecuyer told ABC15 in December.
Glendale is clueless.
